    Description

Martin and Cait, semi retired and both in our 60's, with our dog.
Martin is English and Caitriana is Scottish but have both lived in France for around 20 years
We are in the process of improving our ancient hill top Mas and out buildings, growing vegetables and maintaining our large garden.
Where we live is isolated, and on the top of a hill, close to the the French / Spanish border and the Med.
If you have your own transport it will ensure you have a better time as we cannot guarantee taking you out every day to see the sites and visit villages. But we will do our best for you.
We provide three meals per day (we are meat eaters )and have a dog and can't take people with any allergies including hay fever as we live in a very rural area

  • Help

    Help

We are looking for motivated, mature, committed volunteers with common sense and practical skills who are willing to turn your hand to help us.

Experience is an advantage but not always essential . People who are prepared to muck in and fit in with an easy going and friendly environment

You can be a solo traveller or couple / friends.

Depending on the time of year,

    THE HELP WE NEED:

    We need help with

    - Clearing up the land eg. mow the grass, clear brambles, cut trees and brush, some planting,
    - Help with light DIY projects,
    - General maintenance tasks inside and outside of the house,
    - Clearing out the barns,
    - Helping with daily chores
and probably more according to the needs of the moment and your skills. We are happy to welcome complete beginners though, as long as you are motivated and hard working, we will be working alongside you when we can.

    WHERE -
We are in an isolated situation at 750m alt, 1km from the nearest French village (which only has a restaurant / bar) and 30 mins from nearest towns of Ceret and Le Boulou in France and La Jonquera in Spain). There is no public transport so having your own transport is ESSENTIAL (please do not reply if you don't have transport) .
The house is an old mas which was used for summer grazing for cows and sheep. The house & garden have great views and are surrounded by woods and farmland. There is an abundance of wildlife including deer in the garden, resident barn owls, bats, butterflies and plenty of bird life and with no light pollution - the Milky Way is amazing. If you want to experience rural France, wake up to the sound of the birds & generally soak up the countryside then you'd love it here. It is a great place to come and stay.
That said you have the choice of nice peace and quiet and/or the social experience of going down the mountain onto the plains of France or Catalan Spain. We love the Spanish Costa Brava, for its beaches, secluded coves, snorkelling, food, architecture, flea markets and brocantes, ancient unspoilt charm, hiking, lakes, wines, art - think Dali, archeology, Figueres (35 mins), Girona, Barcelona and thriving local culture.
We love the French side, for its weekly markets, long strands of sandy beach, Collioure, art trails, muscat wines, more hiking and coastal paths, Cathar castles and history.

WHEN - Spring through to Autumn

    FOOD

We love food and are happy to cook but one of your tasks could be cooking for everybody, if you are comfortable doing so.
We grow some vegetables which we incorporate in the meals.

We like meeting new people and sharing experiences, hopefully we will make life long friends along the way.

Feel free to contact us! - if you are interested it would be good, if you let us know what kind of help you think you can give. Thank you very much!

  • Accommodation

    Accommodation

You'd have your own upstairs bedroom (double, bunk or twin) and bathroom, a shared large open plan living / diningroom and shared modern kitchen. The garden is huge with lots of secluded shady spots and there's plenty of private space to relax and unwind and a good sized pool. In the summer, we use the terrace a lot with great views on to the Spanish border. In one of the un - renovated barns, we also have more WIFI and personal space. Everything is modern and there is hot water and wood burner heating. The interior of the house is a smoke free zone.
There is plenty of parking and space for a camper van.

We have a good internet connection and 4G that enables working from home, having Zoom calls and watching series in streaming without issues.

MEALS - We are flexible on this - we are happy to cook but we would encourage everyone to take a turn.
let’s chat and we can discuss what will suit us all best at the time of your visit.
