    Description

We own a small backpacker’s lodge/hostel on the outskirts of Pedasi, about 500m from the beach.
Pedasi is the heart of Panamanian culture, so we get to see and experience many festivals and events.
The region abounds with wildlife, beaches, and mangrove forests, and the town is a quaint village where the local people are determined to maintain their cultural identity.

    Cultural exchange and learning opportunities

There are numerous cultural events and places in Pedasi. Anyone staying here would be able to take advantage of any of these. It would be a fantastic opportunity to practice (or learn) Spanish with the local neighbors. There are some free opportunities to learn traditional ways of using local plants, make hats and bags in the traditional way from plants and others.
We are also in the initial stages of getting more "adventure" packages ready. The first adventure, to plan the others, is to visit the Belgian nearby who brews his craft beer ;-).
We want to offer trips to see the whales, visit the nearby island, fish from a boat and create huge bonfires on the beach. We have a property available to us a short drive away surrounded by. the sea, the river mouth, and an estuary. We want to arrange both day trips and overnight stays there for the fishing and kayaking into the mangrove swamp.

We are working hard to refurbish the building we have bought as a hostel. It was one before, but so far we have replaced the well pump, a lot of the water pipes and most of the wiring. We have done most of the actual construction work and have professional contractors to continue with this. What we would like to find is volunteers who will help us with some of the finishing work, such as painting trims and small details.
We also have a list of projects that we feel would be enjoyable for volunteers. These include: starting a vegetable garden, creating a herb/kitchen garden, painting a mural, doing some "trompe de l'oeil", building a bamboo bar, creating some furniture in the forest out of drift-wood and similar projects.

    Accommodation

We are offering stay in a dormitory style room.
We will be cooking food for ourselves and volunteers would be welcome to join us for those meals. If volunteers would prefer to make their own food, they would be welcome to do so. We would not expect any more than a few hours assistance a day in any case.

    What else ...

The Workawayer who stays with us will be made to feel part of the team, included in what we do. This sometimes includes going to the beach or to other places. We are totally flexible in our approach, so if they want to take two days to go to a festival or just away for a while, that can easily be accommodated.

We have pretty good WiFi access. If you are a serious Digital Nomad, then you can sit on the upper floor verandah of the Hummingbird Inn (a nearby hostel) and use their facilities for free. We have to warn you that working with the distraction of around a hundred hummingbirds who swarm the feeders all day is a massive achievement....
