  • Description

We are an international family of a Brit (James, 38) and two Spanish dogs (Rebel, 2 and Pancho, 4). We live in the countryside of sunny Spain - en el campo, as the locals say - located between the small town of Sax and the village of Salinas in the Alicante province. Both are very typically Spanish, not touristic at all. Our home is surrounded by lovely views of mountains all around us and your bedroom has the same lovely view.

James bought the house 2015 as an empty shell. Since then, our casa has been nicely made up, we built a new pool and started creating a garden. But there are still lots of projects around the house and in the garden that we want to do and that you could help us with.

We are environmentally friendly in our own little ways. Our electricity is off grid using our own PV solar panels all year round. Hot water is solar heated during most of the year and can be supported by a gas boiler when there is not enough sun. We also grow a few own veggies and started growing several fruits.

We also have other visitors in other rooms, so there could be other guests in the house, while you are here, but we usually don't need help with it.

We are fairly easy going and would see you as part of our family, which includes helping with what needs to be done, but also treating ourselves to fun stuff like taking a day off and visiting places you are interested to see.

    Cultural exchange and learning opportunities

We are happy to help practicing English and we always love practicing Spanish.
We genuinely enjoy meeting and learning about other cultures and share our own experiences if one is interested.

Both of us are interested in exploring the area and can give you tips about where to go and what to do. If we have time and you don't have an own car, we would love to take you on a day trip and show you places.

We practice Spanish with our neighbors who do not speak anything else and get gardening advice and seasonal fruits from them. They are lovely! We go most Mondays to the local market to get fresh veggies and fruits and an occasional plant for our garden.

James is the DIY and garden wiz. He is great with building things or fixing them, has the green thumb and the fresh veggies grow thanks to him!

Let us know what you are interested in and would love to learn during your stay!

  • Help

Well, we are new to workaway, but we think, what can or needs to be done depends on the season and on you, as well as on us and what we are generally working on at the time of your stay. So, write us, tell us about yourself and your skills or what you enjoy doing and at what time of the year you would want to come and we can see what you could help us with.

We are also fairly flexible with when the work is done. If you want to and if we are working on one of our projects, your help could be done in fewer days so that then more days are for free-time. You can let us know your preference when you write to us or we play it by ear :) Our preference is to work 9-2 and then head to the local restaurant for Menu del Dia which is a local set menu with local specialties. This gives free afternoons for exploring, hiking or even enjoying the Pool (From Summer onwards, weather permitting)

Things on our general to-do list:
    -Garden clearing and weeding
-setting up an irrigation system in the garden (as soon as possible),
    -spring clean of the house
-extending our vegetable garden for the coming season
-adding lots of plants and trees to our garden (autumn/winter),
-several smaller paint jobs in and around the house (all year around),

Besides those projects, during the summer the garden needs a lot of water and we go around with loads of watering cans (about 20) every or every second evening (hence the irrigation project). Helping us or doing it on your own some days could be part of your help. There is also often other stuff that needs to be done in the garden like weeding or ploughing with the tractor.

As mentioned we have two dogs, Pancho & Rebel, both adorable though very different. We (and especially the dogs!!) love it when guests interact with them and cuddle them, so feel free ;) We do not really need a lot of help with them though as they just aren't a lot of work :)

  • Accommodation

We have a twin room upstairs which consists of 2 single beds. Sharing the family bathroom. There is a shelf and clothes hanger or a wardrobe in the room and two night tables.
You can join us for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Usually one of the meals is warm. If you can cook, we would appreciate the help in sharing the cooking, but if you can't - no worries, we can ;) Please do let us know if you are vegetarian or have any food allergies we need to consider.

  • What else ...

    What else ...

Our direct area is about the outdoors and nature. We have bikes you can borrow, they are great to explore the surrounding villages and towns. There are also lovely hiking routes that you can start right from our house and you can of course use the pool.
The wider area offers lots of different stuff worth seeing and exploring. The coast is about 45 mins by car and there are several great beaches. Alicante (40 mins) is a nice city with a castle, a lovely beach, great restaurants, a cute old town and a lovely stairs quarter up the hill. There are several sights in the mountains, lots of old town and villages with lots of little castles. Sax is the closest one, about 6 mins drive by car or 30 mins by bike, with lots of good restaurants and the typical picturesque castle on a hill. There is a train and bus station in Sax.

We would love to take you to show you some of our favorite spots or new places we haven't checked out ourselves yet.
