Description
🌊 Real Australian coastal life — join our relaxed family in beautiful Bermagui
We're Andy, Hannah and our two kids (11 & 7), living in one of NSW's best-kept secrets: Bermagui — a small, unhurried beach town with great coffee, wild ocean swims, ancient forests and genuine community.
We love meeting people from all walks of life. You'll have your own room, shared bathroom, share meals when it suits everyone, and get a real taste of slow-living on the NSW south coast.
We're well suited to couples, older travellers, and self-sufficient people — Bermagui is small and quiet. If you thrive on city buzz, it might not be your thing. If you love nature, community, and unplugging — you're going to love it here.
What we'll work on together:
Typical tasks include gardening, weeding, painting, general house maintenance, and odd jobs around the house. Practical skills are a bonus but not required — a good attitude matters more. We share cooking and cleaning up.
*We've got some projects that would love an experienced carpenter*
We eat a lot of gluten-free as Hannah is coeliac, and are happy to make vegetarian or vegan food!

Cultural exchange and learning opportunities
Both of us travelled extensively before kids — we love swapping stories, sharing experiences and learning from the people we meet. We'd also love to practise our German if you speak it!
In return, we can offer you something genuinely rare: a slice of real Australian coastal life, away from the tourist trail. The beaches and ocean here are among the most beautiful we've seen anywhere in the world — and we've seen a few.
Life here is slower than the city. There aren't huge crowds, but there is real community — regular gatherings around a fire, shared meals, the occasional dance. And plenty of time to just sit on the veranda with a coffee and a good book.
It's not for everyone. But if it sounds like your kind of thing, you'll love it here.

Help
Things we're working on:
- House painting
- Landscaping (new fire pit! 🔥)
- Weeding & gardening
- General odd jobs and maintenance
Practical skills like carpentry or building are a bonus — let us know what you've got!
We also have a special 10-day remote bush camping trip in April that you're welcome to join, if you've got a sleeping bag and a love of being outside and playing with kids aged 7–13. Proper off-grid stuff — river, stars, no facilities.
We expect 5 hours of work, 5 days a week. The rest of the time is yours — we love ocean swims, sauna sessions and long coffee chats if you're keen.

Accommodation
A private bedroom with a king-size bed and your own toilet (shared shower). You have your own entrance, so you're free to come and go as you please.
We're a 10–15 minute walk from the beach, local shops and coffee.
What else ...
When you are not working, there is a lot to enjoy!
Beaches — several beaches are within walking distance. Some are good for surfing, some for swimming, and the river is great for paddle-boarding
Blue Pool — a beautiful natural ocean swimming pool, very close by
Surf lessons — Camel Rock Surf School is in town if you want to learn to surf
Hiking — Gulaga Mountain is a short drive away and has beautiful walking trails
Food — visit Honorbread, a famous local bread shop. It is very special! 🍞
The town is small and easy to walk around. The beach, shops and coffee are about 10–15 minutes on foot.
Getting around:
There is a local bus to Bega and Batemans Bay, and buses to Sydney and Canberra. The town is quiet and does not have a lot of public transport, but it is easy to get here.
Getting to Bermagui:
From Sydney: Premier Motor Service buses stop here directly
From Canberra: Take the NSW TrainLink bus to Bega, then connect to Bermagui
From Melbourne: Take V/Line to Bega, then connect to Bermagui
We are happy to pick you up from Batemans Bay, Moruya, Bega or Merimbula when you arrive. Just let us know!
