    Description

Note: We appreciate your interest in volunteering with us! However, due to shifting priorities, we may not be as responsive these days. If you don’t receive a reply, it means we currently don’t have opportunities available. Thank you for understanding!

    Hello everyone!
We are Eliyan & Puji, the founders of the Foundation, which was established in Lombok Island in 2020. We are based in Sengkol village in the southern part of Central Lombok.
We are a community-based grassroots organisation and our aim is to improve the quality of life of the people in our community in Sengkol village and, on a larger scale, on the island of Lombok.

What we do is divided into five main programmes:

    1. Eco-School: for children (5-14 years old), providing non-formal education in the afternoons. This mainly includes: English, Biology, Geography, Gardening, but also creative and movement based subjects such as Art, Dance and Theatre.

    2. For teenagers and adults (14 years and above), with an orientation of Community Development and Empowerment, we aim to strengthen the social fabric and empower individuals and the community to address their own needs and drive their own development. This means occasional education and capacity building programmes, promotion of sustainable development practices and other workshops.

    3. For women, we focus on empowerment in various areas (from parenting and gardening to business management) to create a better place for women in society.

    4. Nue: for business initiatives with a social entrepreneurship orientation, we aim to establish social enterprises, develop sustainable business models and promote innovative solutions that create positive impact and financial sustainability through business principles and practices.

    5. For the wider Lombok community, with a service orientation, we provide fun learning classes and workshops for teachers and students, particularly in the more remote and underserved areas of the island. We also provide book donations, toiletries and stationery.

Currently, our team members are dedicated local volunteers and our work is only possible because of their presence.
Our main motivation for hosting workaway volunteers is to broaden our perspective on what we can do and to get ideas on how we can improve.

We are located in the village of Sengkol, in the southern part of Central Lombok. In the village there are local fruit markets open every morning and sometimes during the day if you want to try tropical fruits & foods. We also have a local gym nearby for those who want to exercise.

We are part of the Sasak community, which is characteristic of this region, and we also practice Islam. While staying with us you can learn the Indonesian language and see how the locals live in this area of Lombok. Our food is also traditional to this culture.

Kuta is a famous tourist place on the south coast which is 10km away from us. Kuta & the surrounding area offer beautiful beaches and opportunities for surfing, snorkelling and watching beautiful sunsets.

The island of Lombok is rich in natural beauty: clear water & blue beaches (like the Gili Islands), hiking (Mount Rinjani National Park) or hundreds of waterfalls. It is not a very touristy island yet, so there are many hidden gems!

Our ideal workaway volunteer will have the following qualities
Good community member, knows how to work in a team and takes responsibility. Creative and talented, but most importantly committed to the agreement they make with us. Friendly and respectful in the way they communicate and live. Ideally they are experienced in working with a group of children or adults, or have experience helping with social NGOs.

Our rural community follows some traditional rules, so we have some expectations of our volunteers:
We usually accept one volunteer, but we can accept couples as long as they are married, and friends can only come together if they are of the same gender (except if they are siblings).
We also prefer to work with people over the age of 25 as we find them to be more committed, serious and often more experienced.
    *Note to LGBTQ members.
As the community here is traditional, close-knit and conservative, the majority of people are not used to having LGBTQ members among them and they may also face unfamiliarity and lack of acceptance. Therefore, we need to take this into consideration when accepting volunteers from the LGBTQ community.

In general, we need help in the following areas, listed in order of priority:
    - NGO management: we are still a new organisation and could use some guidance from people with expertise in NGO management to learn how to make our organisation successful.
We also need help with the measurement of the impact of our outputs so that we can be aware of how & where we should do better in our programs..
    - Fundraising: we need ideas & advice on how to improve our fundraising skills, perhaps other fundraising platforms to use, and also project campaigning.
    - Teaching: we welcome all skills from formal education (English, maths, ecology, etc) as well as non-formal education (dance, art, gardening, etc).
    - Curriculum development: we are open to any ideas on what changes can be made to make a positive impact.
    - Website & social media: we value any designer who can add ideas and content to our pages (we prefer people who are equipped with a camera & laptop for editing).

However, we are always open to new ideas that can help us explore new areas.
We would also like to add a keyword to show who has read our whole profile: Nusantara. Please add this as a P.S. note at the end of your request, otherwise we won't consider it.

About the schedule: we are not strict about it, usually we let volunteers juggle their free time and help time as they prefer, as long as they fulfil their part of the agreement.
We don't expect anyone to help more than 25 hours a week, but we do expect volunteers to keep track of their hours and let us know how they plan their help & free days so that we can prepare our part of the agreement accordingly.

The minimum requested time is 2 weeks, and in case of an extension we prefer to have a meeting about further plans and how we mutually feel about working together.

    Accommodation

Our large family lives together and the house is often filled with friends, neighbours or distant family members.
We can offer volunteers a private room, which is simple and small, with a double mattress.
The bathroom is shared, with a squat toilet and bucket shower.
We will share our daily meals with you, cooking delicious local dishes that always come with rice. If you have any dietary requirements, you are welcome to use the kitchen to prepare your own food.
    Drinking water is also available.

Important Note: We have many cats (20+) in the house, although they don't usually roam the common areas.

    What else ...

We live very close to the airport, so if a volunteer arrives there we can arrange to pick them up. Otherwise, the main means of transport is to hire a scooter or take a taxi.
Also, if you arrive from Lembar Harbour (by boat from Bali) be aware of taxi scams. There is also no way to get a Grab taxi from the harbour, but in Mataram and Kuta there are Grab and BlueBird options, we recommend using their app & services.
