    Description

OUR VISION AND HOW WE CHOOSE TO LIVE
Empowering humanity through the awakening of individuals to their highest potential.

We currently need help with organic vegetable and flower gardens, construction, maintenance, and cooking. We ask for a 6-week commitment.

We have been welcoming volunteers to our home for 7 years and have hosted over 1000 volunteers, some returning every year, and some staying for a few months. As this is a large and remote property, 350 hectares, there is always a need for outdoor work. 80% of our land is an old growth forest reserve and for the cultivated land, the future overall vision is to produce vegetables, fruits, grains, livestock and honey for ourselves, guests and eventually to the surrounding communities.

Much of the help here is of a physical nature, however, the main requirement we ask for is to have a positive attitude, flexibility, and a willingness to help and learn. As we are all living together, we are all responsible for various communal tasks. This is essential for basic hygiene, cleanliness and comfort. In particular, everyone helping with washing the dishes, keeping the kitchen clean at all times, bathrooms, bedrooms, indoor and outdoor communal spaces.

We are still developing and promoting our retreat center, therefore we are always looking for help with marketing, social media, video making etc. From December to April, our summer season, we are usually open to guests, we host retreats led by international practitioners who bring their own groups here and we hold our own retreats of personal transformation to guests from all over the world. Due to the Covid virus, it looks like we will be focusing more on the local market.

To stimulate a learning environment here, we ask all volunteers, during their 6 weeks stay, to present at least one workshop on a topic they feel passionate about.

    Cultural exchange and learning opportunities

Life here offers opportunities to practice honest and effective communication, the gift of giving and serving others, the capacity to live in balance with nature and our environment, the art of creative expression and the value and dynamics of cooperation. Our home has become known as a safe space that nurtures personal growth and provides an opportunity to develop personal life skills.

Every few weeks, we hold Sharing Circles where each person has the opportunity to share their feelings from the heart, freely and without judgment, to have the courage to show vulnerability, open our hearts, allow others to see who we truly are, and to recognize themselves in ourselves.

We encourage our volunteers to host skill-based workshops of things that they are passionate about during the free time. In the past, volunteers have offered yoga, guided meditations, creative writing, biodanza, Tai Chi, salsa, massages etc. We believe that when we share our knowledge, and our passions, we can all learn from each other.

Travelers can be exposed to the local community of farmers in the area.

The predominant language spoken here is English though there are usually native Spanish speakers as well.

Fun stuff to do here: cultural exchange, walking in the forest, hiking up the mountain or to the thermal hot springs, swimming in the lake or waterfall, making music, deep and meaningful conversations, hanging out at the beach or in the forest, absorbing the beauty of the landscape and establishing connections and support, in the form of life long friends, and travel companions.

  • Help

    Help

In general, the help can involve; gardening, digging, sowing seeds, renovation, maintenance, construction, chopping wood, landscaping, cooking, baking bread, cleaning, hospitality, road maintenance, carpentry, painting, plumbing, electrical, looking after our chickens, sheep and pigs, beekeeping, marketing, video making, fundraising, admin help on computers. Tasks depend on the time of year and priority of our needs.

If you have any unique skills or experience in any of the above list, we would love to hear about it. During our summer period, preference will be given to volunteers who can assist us in our immediate needs. We especially welcome help from master gardeners, beekeepers, and builders

We try to match your skills and passions to the tasks available although our needs at the time will always have priority. Our usual work hours are in the mornings, Monday to Friday however from December to April, our summer season, the shifts and days may vary from week to week to meet our hospitality needs. Hours consist of about 5 hours a day, 5 days a week with 2 days off.

Our high season in the summer, is from 1st Oct 2020 to 30th April 2021, and we require a 6-week commitment. We ask all our volunteers to commit to staying for this period as we feel it takes this amount of time to fully integrate into this environment and for us all to have the best possible experience. After the first week, we will review your situation with you to check you have settled in and that you are able to live in alignment with us. During this period we can accommodate 25 to 30 volunteers at one time. This may seem like a lot of people, however there are many places here in nature, where you can find your own space.

In the winter (May to September, when the weather is colder and wetter) we may drop to 10 volunteers or less.

There may be a possibility of staying on longer though this would be discussed after arrival and would be by mutual agreement. As in any relationship, it will ultimately depend on our mutual experience and on the degree to which initiative, quality of work and commitment has been demonstrated.

To apply, please try to contact us in advance and let us know which Monday you would like to arrive, how long you would like to stay for, what your skill set and abilities are, why you would like to volunteer here and what work related areas you would most able to help us with.

Please let us know if there are any health concerns you would like us to be aware of. We are one hour’s drive from a medical clinic with limited buses. This is a remote location.

We ask everyone to arrive in Osorno on a Monday in time to catch the local 2pm bus. The bus will drop you off at the end of the road. From there you have 2 options, first option is to have a car bring you down, we can arrange this for you if you confirm with us. The cost is $6000 pesos per car ride which can be divided by the number of passengers being picked up. The second option is to walk down a distance of 5k which will take about 1 ½ hours. You can take an overnight bus from Santiago on a Sunday night to arrive in Osorno for Monday morning.

  • Accommodation

    Accommodation

From December to April, we stay at the barn which is a large, rustic, wooden structure in the forest. It has shared dormitories which are furnished with bunk beds, a kitchen, a living space, bathroom and shower. (have a look at the photos below) There is also a compost toilet outside!

If you think you would like more privacy, we recommend you bring your own tent (ground sheet, etc) as camping is available in the old-growth forest near the barn. It's also useful for going on overnight hikes. Even if you bring your own tent, you will still always have a bed available.

You need to bring your own sleeping bag and your own towel. (We recommend that your sleeping bag is at least suitable for temperatures of (0/–5). The nights are always cold even in summer. Showers are provided. Sometimes though we cannot promise, we are able to provide alternative accommodation for couples.

Cooking is done on a wood fire stove and is communal. We provide 3 meals a day, 7 days a week which are mainly vegetarian.

If you need computer access, please consider bringing your own laptop as our computers are mainly for business use.

If you like to watch movies, then it is best to download them before coming here. Should you require additional wifi access for streaming, downloading or updating we suggest you purchase a Chilean simcard before arriving as you will need to activate it. (Movistar is recommended).

A washing machine and hand wash buckets are available.

Please bring everything you may need for your 6 week stay as we only go to Osorno for supplies every 2 or 3 weeks. Osorno is over 2 hours drive away and the bus stop (is 5 kilometers away from the barn) with limited buses.

  • What else ...

    What else ...

As we are opening our home to you, we prefer to receive volunteers who have a commitment to a healthy and holistic approach to life and who truly appreciate the beauty of nature. In our way of living here, we try to stay as close to nature as possible therefore and we are not accepting any of the following on our property:

    - Theft
    - Drugs
    - Smoking
    - Alcohol
    - Dishonesty
    - Poor timekeeping
    - Wastage as in the misuse/neglect of our property and littering (we value and preserve all that is here)
    - Pets (as we already have disharmony between our 2 dogs and 1 cat)
    - Excessive noise and behavior (let's enjoy the sounds of nature and the tranquility of this sanctuary)

This is fundamental to us and we are committed to our policies. We reserve the right to ask you to leave should you have difficulties in aligning with our policies.

However, we do celebrate Christmas and usually hold a celebration every 6 weeks or so.

Please remember that it is your responsibility to have the correct insurance whilst travelling and volunteering. we do recommend that you have insurance in place before leaving home especially in relation to any medical coverage. To ensure your insurance policy fits your requirements, make sure to read everything in your policy including the small print. Workaway and HelpX both recommend using World Nomads for insurance.

So that I know you have fully read our profile, please include “I have read your profile thoroughly” when messaging us which Monday date you are thinking of arriving.

Look forward to hearing from you,
Love and light, Your hosts, Helen and Greg
