    Description

Hi there! I’m Astrid, and together with my husband Tony, we live in the heart of Darwin CBD with our two little girls - Lotti (2.5 years) and Lola (10 months) - and our crazy young cat Poppy.

Tony and I run a small civil construction company. He’s often away working in remote areas, while I stay at home with the kids and manage the household and business admin. Life can get a little hectic, so we’re always grateful for a helping hand!

We’ve recently had support from my mum who stayed with us for a few months, but she’s heading back home soon - which is why we’re now opening our home to Workawayers.

Darwin is a unique, laid-back city with a great community vibe, especially during the dry season. There are plenty of markets, festivals, outdoor concerts, beach walks, and even the occasional swim (if you’re feeling brave!). We love the outdoors and spend most of our free time exploring the beautiful nature in and around Darwin.

Our place is also a great base to explore the Top End and the outback. If you’re interested, we’re more than happy to share travel tips - and when Tony is around, he has lots of local knowledge about the best spots to visit.

We’re looking for someone friendly and reliable who enjoys being around kids and is happy to help with light household tasks or occasional childcare. In return, we offer a welcoming home, good company, and a true Darwin experience.

    Cultural exchange and learning opportunities

Staying with us means becoming part of a young, down-to-earth family living in the heart of Darwin. We're always up for a chat over coffee, a walk to the local market, or a BBQ in the backyard. You’ll have the chance to experience life in the Top End — a truly unique part of Australia known for its relaxed vibe, strong multicultural community, and rich Indigenous heritage.

We love sharing insights into our lifestyle, including what it’s like running a small business in remote Australia, raising young kids, and navigating the balance between work and family life. We can also show you around our favourite local spots — from beach walks and tropical markets to weekend festivals and community events. There’s always something happening in Darwin during the dry season!

In return, we’d love to learn about your background, culture, and experiences. Hosting Workawayers gives us and our children the wonderful opportunity to connect with people from around the world, and we’re always curious to hear different perspectives and stories. It’s important to us that your stay feels like a cultural exchange — not just a helping hand, but a meaningful connection.

We’d love someone who enjoys spending time with babies and is happy to help care for our 10-month-old daughter, Lola, for around 4–5 hours a day, Monday to Thursday. I’ll be working from home during this time, so you won’t be on your own - just helping keep her happy, entertained, and safe while I focus on work.

Previous experience with young children is a big plus, and a calm, warm nature is ideal.

This host offers a language exchange
We’re raising our kids bilingual (German-English), so while it’s not essential, we’d love to host a German-speaking Workawayer — the more German our girls hear, the better! It’s a bonus, not a requirement.

  • Accommodation

    Accommodation

You'll have your own comfortable bedroom and, most of the time, your own bathroom - which is only shared occasionally if we host other guests (which doesn’t happen often). Of course, there’s Wi-Fi and everything you need to feel at home.

I'm flexible and happy to adapt to whatever works best for you. I usually do the grocery shopping once a week and can easily pick up anything you need. You're very welcome to join us for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, or cook with us if you enjoy shared meals - but if you prefer more independence, that’s totally fine too.

If you’d rather take care of your own meals, I can provide $200 per week for food expenses (just for reference, our family of four usually spends around $150 per week on groceries, excluding eating out). We're easygoing and want your stay to be relaxed and enjoyable!

  • What else ...

    What else ...

Since we have two little kids, we prefer a non-smoking environment. We’re totally fine with socialising and enjoying a drink now and then, but we have zero tolerance for drunken or aggressive behaviour - we want to keep things peaceful and family-friendly.

We also have a cat, so if you’re allergic, unfortunately this might not be the right place for you.

If you need to get around, I’m happy to lend you my car when I’m not using it. Darwin also has a good public bus system, and if you have your own car, there’s secure underground parking available.

During the dry season, Darwin offers plenty of short-term job opportunities. Staying with us could be a great way to enjoy free accommodation and meals while still having time to work and save for your next adventure!
