  • Description

We live on a croft in NW Sutherland and are designated a 'Woodland Croft'. We are currently engaged in fencing and as soon as that is complete will be starting on planting native species-broadleaf. On the croft we also have poultry, a polytunnel to grow flowers for the community, two collies and two cats. Accommodation for visitors is in a wood cabin. It has a wood burning stove and is adjacent to a hot tub. September saw us hosts two couples who seemed to enjoy the work, area and hospitality. The long term plan is to have woodland walks open to the community and also to renovate/rebuild the croft house which is at present uninhabitable. We are situated in a very remote and beautiful area, of great interest to artists, hillwalkers, geologists, wild life enthusiasts, etc. The weather can be wild, four seasons in one day is quite common. As a retired English teacher I can help with language skills. I also have a strong interest in Scottish and Nordic literature. I also have a good stock of art materials and textiles. We are close to some superb beaches, diving and surfing are popular in the area.

Our previous visitors have enjoyed learning the practical aspects of fencing-they have found it a welcome contrast to indoor work. The surrounding area is rich in flora and fauna-we are very close to nature.

  • Help

  • What else ...

    What else ...

Good restaurant within walking distance. Excellent carry out curries from neighbouring croft. Village of Kinlochbervie, nearby, has fuel, PO, two general merchants, hotel, two gift shops, medical centre, fire station, schools, churches and large port. Public transport is limited. I can pick up from rail head at Lairg if necessary. Bikes are available here. The screen machine visits monthly with the latest films. I have been involved with local choirs and am currently engaged in an art project with a local museum. We are volunteer drivers for the community bus and I teach on supply for local schools from time to time. We keep busy and are fairly self sufficient. The animals provide much entertainment! We have internet and catch-up TV. There is much of interest to lovers of the great outdoors in the in the area.
