We are a family of 5, husband Gary, wife Kathryn, and our adopted children Lughano aged 9yrs, Martin aged 7yrs and Zoe 6yrs. We own and run a tourist lodge in Nkhata Bay Malawi that employs 40 people. We do our best to create a happy work environment and consider ourselves and all of the staff to be like one family.
We have started a primary school for our children and 17 of the staff children of the same age. (6yrs to 10 yrs). We have separate premises for the school, it is fully equipped and it opened in September 2013. Right now it is operating with two classes, grade 2 with 7 kids and grade 4 with 12 kids and our aim is to continue for the whole of primary school for the same children, following a cambridge university press international primary curriculum.
We are looking for a volunteer teacher for a minimum of one term at a time (3 months). The whole school year is our aim, 9 months, or two terms 6 months. Preferably qualified and or with experience in primary education. The school is taught entirely in English and so fluency in English is essential. There is a permanent Malawian teacher at the school to provide continuity and support to the volunteer. We value the variety and cultural exchange that an international teacher can offer to the children and any additional skills such as drama, music, dance or sports will be an added bonus!
Staying at the lodge and being a part of the Nkhata Bay Community is a wonderful experience for who ever has the time and inclination to join us.
The teacher we are looking for should preferably be a qualified primary teacher and or have some experience with working with primary aged children in a school setting. We need a teacher to be able to commit to at least one whole term and preferable all terms. A few weeks is not an option. They will be working together with our Malawian teacher and another volunteer teacher as well as a Malawian teaching assistant. All of the children are speaking and reading and writing in English. We want to follow an international curriculum based in English but with a Southern African bias. School will be mornings only with the teachers free to plan their lessons etc in their own time. We will support you with all materials etc needed. The school is well equipped with all learning aids you may need.
Accommodation will be in the lodge, a private chalet with private bathroom, small sitting room, desk and basic equipment for self-catering if you wish. But we will give you free food from the lodge restaurant and bar. There is no restriction on what you can order from the restaurant. You will have access to all the facilities we offer at the lodge, internet, boats, snorkeling, trips, all for free. Its a great place to meet people and socialize, as well as to befriend more permanent residents too.
Malawi is a wonderful, friendly, laid back country, one of the easiest to travel in Africa. There is plenty to do locally and you have a great base to explore neighboring countries in the school holidays. Our lodge has a great reputation and you can not help but love living there.
The kids are gorgeous and well behaved.
