We are a family of 5, husband Gary, wife Kathryn, and our adopted children Lughano aged 11yrs, Martin aged 9yrs and Zoe 8yrs. We own and run a tourist lodge in Nkhata Bay Malawi that employs 17 people. We do our best to create a happy work environment and consider ourselves and all of the staff to be like one family.
We are looking for a tutor for our children. Lughano and Martin are currently studying year 4 and Zoe is in Year 2 our aim is to continue for the whole of primary school for the same children, following the British primary national curriculum. We have a comprehensive homeschooling package which provides all the text books, work books and teachers guides for all the subjects covered as well as a weekly schedule of what work to cover for each year so that all work is covered and the teaching stays on track. We have loads of additional recourses and reading books as well as access to a laptop and printer.
We are looking for a volunteer teacher for a minimum of one term at a time (3 months). The whole school year is our aim, 9 months, or two terms 6 months. Preferably qualified and or with experience in primary education. The school is taught entirely in English and so fluency in English is essential. We value the variety and cultural exchange that an international teacher can offer to the children and any additional skills such as drama, music, dance or sports will be an added bonus!
Staying at the lodge and being a part of the Nkhata Bay Community is a wonderful experience for who ever has the time and inclination to join us.
This project could involve children. For more information see our guidelines and tips here.
The teacher we are looking for should preferably be a qualified primary teacher and or have some experience with working with primary aged children in a school setting. We need a teacher to be able to commit to at least one whole term and preferable all terms. A few weeks is not an option. All of the children are speaking and reading and writing in English. School will be mornings only with the teachers free to plan their lessons etc in their own time. We will support you with all materials etc needed. The school is well equipped with all learning aids you may need.
Accommodation will be in the lodge, a private chalet with private bathroom, small sitting room, desk and basic equipment for self-catering if you wish. But we will give you free food from the lodge restaurant and bar. There is no restriction on what you can order from the restaurant. You will have access to all the facilities we offer at the lodge, internet, boats, snorkeling, trips, all for free. Its a great place to meet people and socialize, as well as to befriend more permanent residents too.
Malawi is a wonderful, friendly, laid back country, one of the easiest to travel in Africa. There is plenty to do locally and you have a great base to explore neighboring countries in the school holidays. Our lodge has a great reputation and you can not help but love living there.
