  • Description

    Description

We are a couple in our 50s living in a traditional log house at 780 meters above sea level in Nesbyen, Norway. During the summer our youngest daughter (20) will also be at home.
We both work full time, and hope this arrangement allows us to get some help while also meeting new people and giving someone the chance to experience Norwegian mountain life.

    You should:
    • be in reasonably good physical condition (the work is physical)
    • be practical and able to work independently of course after good information and training
    • speak English or a Scandinavian language
    • be comfortable spending time alone as we might be at work during daytime. (see more at the end)

Experience with horses is a plus, but not required, but you should not be allergic to horses.
Ideally you have a car or at least a driver’s license. If not, you can borrow a bicycle.
Bring your own work clothes and sturdy shoes suitable for wet terrain. We provide work gloves.

We have two horses, one cold blood trotter age 23 ourselves, and will borrow a 15 years old icelandic horse for the summer months (june-end september).

Status pr 18.5.26: We are now fully booked (unless some of the people we have made plans with backs out).
We might however have an opening for a girl who want to stay here with another workawayer 10.-17.8.
September might also be open. In september, cooking dinner mon-fri will be one of your tasks :)

    Help

Tasks will vary depending on your interests and skills. We will work together most of the time, but if you prefer to work on times we are not available to join you, we are flexible and will will find a solution. The tasks may include:
    • Repairing and putting up fences (mostly electrical) in horse pastures in wonderful mountain areas. We will teach you whats important to make a good fence.
    • Removing horse manure from fields near our house to make a nice environment for the horses
    • Clearing nettles, bushes and small trees from pasture areas. You will learn how to maintain the pastures to prevent it from overgrowing
    • Cleaning and polishing horse equipment. You will learn why this is important and how this is done
    • Cleaning the stable after the winter (a one days work)
    • Cooking dinner, berry picking, gardening or small carpentry tasks.

We will do some tasks together, and some you can do on your own.

    Accommodation

    We offer:
    • Accommodation in a private apartment in our house with free access to outdoor jacuzzi
    • Shared meals included (or you may cook for yourself if you prefer)

  • What else ...

    What else ...

The area is great for golf, bicycle both terrain and downhill. Check out visitnesbyen and nesfjellet for more information. Our jacuzzi can be used whenever you want to. We also have a lake 5 minuts walk from our house, where it is possible to go swimming.

We would like to keep the opportunity to go on vacationfor a few weeks og for a long weekend. Our daughter (20) will probably be at home. Therefore it would be good to let us know how you feel about staying here if we're not here.
When we are working, you will have most of the day on your own, therefore it is important taht you are hapy spending time/working alone -you will of course be given all information to make sure it goes ok.
We live 12 km from Nesbyen, 2 km from the golf course, 2-7 km from the pastures. If you don't plan to come by car, it will therefore be necessary to use a biyce to get around if you are doing thngs on your own.

If you are a couple or two friends, that might be nice for you. If you travel alone, please let us know if you would like to stay here at the same time as another workawayer or if you prefer to stay here alone.

We had our first volunteer in may 2026, Zara (27) from New Zealand. This was not through Workaway, but she would like us to share her review:

"I have had the absolute pleasure of being Hilde and Reidar's first volunteer. I stayed with them for a week, and everything was perfect.
Their place is lovely, and the room you stay in is amazingly clean and comfortable. They make you feel very welcome in their home.
The work and everything in the ad were exactly as described. I did some mucking out, cleaned the stable, and oiled tack.
They were amazing hosts all around who knew a lot about the local area and shared knowledge of their traditions. They also helped me learn some Norwegian words.
The food they provided during my stay was plentiful and of good quality; I was never hungry.
Their horse, Norella, was also a dream to ride. With her great temperament, I always felt safe around her.
I would highly recommend this to anyone, as this has been one of the best experiences I have ever had abroad.
Thank you so much, Hilde and Reidar!"
