Description
We are a non-profit Spay and Neuter and Community Veterinary Clinic located in the historic walled city of Campeche, Mexico. We serve a population who wants to help alleviate the suffering of abandoned cats and dogs. We are particularly keen to welcome people with a background in the veterinary field for an exchange of practices and ideas.
Campeche is a beautiful city that is incredibly rich in culture, history and nature. It was one of the epicentres of Mayan civilization and prehispanic archeological sites are numerous. Once colonized, Campeche grew into an important trading port which was besieged by pirates in the 17th centuries, resulting in fortifications. It is one of the only two walled cities in latin america. The coastline contains countless pristine virgin beaches. The Calakmul biosphere boasts incredible bio-diversity including monkeys, toucans, humminbirds, tapir, jabali and jaguars.
I am Ursula, born in Canada but moved to Mexico a number of years ago and settled in Campeche 4 years ago. I founded Granos de Arena shortly after arriving and it is my passion.
We have 5 full-time staff members at the clinic, 4 of whom are veterinarians and one who is a veterinary technician. We also have volunteers including students and retirees.
Our living accommodations are located very close to the clinic, within easy walking distance. We have a small private apartment inside the old walls and when that is not available, we would offer you a deluxe room in a boutique hotel. In either case you have your own king sized bed and private bath. We do not cook for you (and are vegans) but you have access to a kitchen to prepare your own meals.

Cultural exchange and learning opportunities
We are a great option for someone interest in a career in veterinary health sciences and anyone who wants to make a difference in the world.
Our staff are local and our service users are all local, some of them tracing their ancestry back to the original founding families that were here in 1492. You will get a lot of exposure to a living breathing community far away from what tourists visiting Mexico normally experience. It will give you an excellent opportunity to practice your spanish, eat regional foods, and experience local customs and traditions, and understand the real challenges and joys of living in the yucatan pensinsula.
Registered charity
This host is a registered charity in their country and is looking for volunteers to help with their project(s).

Help
You will be working directly with veterinarians, in surgery, in consultations and in patient recovery.
Patient recovery involves monitoring the dogs and cats that are transitioning out of anesthesia under the supervision of the veterinary team.
Previous veterinary experience isn’t necessary (but would be amazing) but you should be comfortable working with animals and not afraid to get dirty.
Some of our vets speak English but we will help you work on your Spanish.

Accommodation
Accommodation is offsite in a vacation rental located nearby, you will have your own room and private bath and sometimes your own apartment.
We do not cook for you (and we are vegans) but we have a full kitchen with cutlery, dishware, microwave, cooktop and a refrigerator and will provide ingredients. We are also located in the centre of town right across from a cafe.
What else ...
Campeche is an amazing place to tour and visit. We have virgin beaches, loads of archaeological sites and wonderful colonial history. And the warmest people!!! It’s a tropical climate so be prepared for heat and humidity, and rain in the rainy season.
