    Description

Families welcome! We have three children (ages 4, 2, 1). A married couple or a family is preferred for our accommodation.

We have a good harvest this year and are looking fir help with preserving! This includes garden vegetables as well as a flock of heritage meat chickens raised on milk and sprouted grains.

Summer work projects include carpentry, fencing, gardening, harvesting and preserving, milking the cow, mixing and fermenting food for our chickens and piglets. Also a chance to work with horses if you are the right fit! It's been a lovely summer and a great time to visit our beautiful area. Many diverse projects available.

We are a remote homestead and can offer wilderness adventure! We would love to show our Canadian hospitality to anyone in need of a place to stay on their travels! Our homestead journey began almost six years ago when we purchased land from C.N rail which was used as a ballast pit in the early 1900's. A family of 5, we have 3 large dogs who guard our flock of chickens, cows, horses, and market pigs.

We love conversations during our meals and we love strong coffee! These are great opportunities to share stories and past experiences, what better time than when satisfying your appetite! We also usually have a large family meal with our extended family at least once a week. Our most abundant resource here is fresh water, there are so many beautiful lakes to visit, fish, swim, or just sit and enjoy. Must love nature! We are living off grid with the intent of still enjoying the use of appliances (like dishwasher, washer and dryer etc.) its all a balance.

  • Help

    Help

We have something for all abilities! From simple everyday farm chores to milling up lumber with the sawmill we have a large diversity of work available. If you're into cooking and housekeeping you can do that or if you'd rather be outdoors that's fine too! Its best to do what you're good at :) Our expectations will vary depending on your experience and enthusiasm. There's a lot of straightforward tasks to do but if you're bored with that stuff there's more that requires experience and knowledge!

    What else ...

We are fairly remote here, no public transport so you would need a vehicle to get here, alternatively there is a bus that travels to the nearest town (Atikokan) where we can pick up/drop off, we could also arrange to pick up at the nearest city (Thunder Bay) if we have advance notice. There is a lot of good fishing and hiking here, trails to explore. We have a bounty of wildlife! There are several abandoned mine sites that are interesting to visit, and Quetico Provincial park is a short drive away. Our nearby community is the canoeing capital of Canada, and as so there are many lakes and rivers to enjoy! I enjoy horseback riding, walks through the forest, sewing, baking and much more. We are both outdoors people and our little ones like to be out in the fresh air! You would be welcome to join us on our outings to town to buy supplies, check the mail, attend church, volunteer, etc.
