Description
Welcome to the family farm on the beautiful island of Samsø.
The farm:
It is a farm built in 1911. It used to be a large agricultural farm with many hectars of land and animals. Since 25 years it has not been used for that purpose anymore, but there is still a lot of produce coming from the garden, where many fruit and nut trees have been planted. Since we moved here in 2022 we use the fruits for ourselves and our guests.
With the farm we took over a Bnb that was established by the previous owners and we continue to run it all year round. During Summer time we host holiday guests and in the low season we are hosting artists in residence.
We have a 2 hectar garden, small forest, 15 chickens, 5 sheep, a cat, a greenhouse (tomatoes, cucumbers, wine...), many fruit trees (plum, apple, cherry, peach, mirabelle, mulberry, fig), berries, walnut trees, raised beds for vegetables and many old trees, bushes and flowers.
The farm has big old barns, that we more and more are cleaning up and renovating.
Who are we:
We are Hannah and Johann with our 3 year old son Bo. We took over the farm and the BnB two years ago and brought a printmaking studio, a sound studio and our love for organizing creative workshops for children and adults. We run the artist in residency program, childrens art club, open printmaking studio and occasionally art exhibitions on the farm. We are artists ourselves. Johann is educated as a printmaker and Hannah as social worker and installation artist. . Next to our professional jobs on the farm (Hannah is in charge of the BnB and Johann in charge of the print workshop), we have many tasks in our private home and garden.
When speaking about gardening or handcraft, "learning by doing" is our Motto. We both grew up with kitchen gardens and fruit trees, but we are not professional farmers. We love working with plants and animals, take care of the old buildings, make firewood and so on. And we think it could be even more fun and make the work lighter, if we share it with helpers.Types of help and learning opportunities
