We operate an organic market garden on Bowen Island, a twenty-minute ferry ride from Vancouver. We grow a vast variety of fruits and vegetables. Our sunny one hectare property includes an orchard, a vineyard, three ponds, and vegetable and flower beds. Since we own a series of art supply stores in British Columbia, we also have artists who run several summer painting classes for both children and adults in the garden. We have a friendly, hypoallergenic dog who is used to the many visitors we have dropping by. Bowen Island is a friendly and accessible community, and offers many options for hiking, a bus service, and several swimming beaches. The village has two grocery stores, two bakeries, a pharmacy, a library, a doctor, a bank, three churches, and numerous shops, galleries, and restaurants. The ferry runs regularly every day and an express bus service takes you from the terminal to downtown Vancouver in about thirty minutes. We have lived here for over twenty years and have employed several people over that time. Our last couple were with us for two and a half years.
Our island is home to a high percentage of artists, musicians, and young families, as well as long-time residents and retirees. It is a popular tourism site offering easy access to hiking trails, beaches, and lakes. A sea kayaking company offers rentals and classes in the summer. Whales, orcas, and dolphins are frequently seen in the surrounding waters. The city of Vancouver is a half-hour bus ride from the ferry terminal and Whistler mountain resort is a two-hour drive in the opposite direction. We have travelled extensively in Europe, Asia, and North and Central America and enjoy meeting new people wherever we go. We will pay an hourly wage to cover food costs as well as provide comfortable private accommodation.
This host offers accommodation and payment.
We would like someone to help us with weeding, watering, and harvesting. Although gardening experience would be desirable, a willingness to learn and a positive and flexible personality are much more important to us. We speak English, French, and German, and can make ourselves understood in Spanish and Italian. The work-day could easily be broken into morning and late afternoon/early evening shifts with time-off mid-day to allow for island exploration.
We can no longer offer accommodation on our property. However, in the past we have offered paid part-time summer work to workaway volunteers who are staying at other places on our island.
We live in a small house in a big garden. In the summer most of our food comes from the garden. We are trying as much as possible to live in harmony with nature and most of our friends and family share our commitment to protecting our endangered environment.
