    Description

We are Max, Pete, Cocoa & Sparty we also share our house with another friend & several rental guests. Our future project WILL be an animal sanctuary & a very affordable health retreat specialising in autoimmune conditions such as Chronic Fatigue & Hypothyroidism, in a well thought out Permaculture Design in France. This project is however a couple of years in the future, for now we need to focus on looking after Sparty, keeping the house looking good- in the hopes of selling it soon to fund the Sanctuary.
We are currently living in Bristol, England & finding it a bit challenging to move towards our goal in France. Our latest rescue cat Sparty is very emotionally & physically vulnerable. He needs many hours of attention, constant supervision outdoors, love & mental & physical stimulation or he becomes depressed & upset.
Currently due to my struggle with afore mentioned health conditions I have become stuck in a cycle of household chores, sleep, chores & sleep! I need caring thoughtful volunteers to relieve me of just some of the chores ( a few hours a week that everyone normally needs to do) but most of all the care of Sparty. Sparty needs 3 hours of your time daily. A morning walk followed by food perhaps some play & then sitting down on the sofa with him to settle him to sleep. He won't settle happily till he has had a good walk, food & attention from you & your lap to lean on.
We love hosting guests from all over the world, we have been doing it for years. There's plenty of outdoor spaces around the house to enjoy in the good weather - we have built a couple of decks in our garden, planted a few fruit bushes & trees and we anticipate a fair crop of squash this year.
If you can help in the garden a couple of hours each week or just do some watering once or twice a week that would be lovely too.

If you are interested in permaculture & natural building Pete is a veritable encyclopedia of information. Practically if you are interested in building from broken pallets you can help us further our garden & fencing projects. We have several guests staying with us at anytime ( we don't really need help with this part - it's fairly self -sufficient) so there is always someone to hang out & chat with from various other places in the world.

The number one thing we need help with is Sparty! Sparty is our very active & very brave BLIND young male rescue cat from India. Sparty needs to be accompanied outdoors for up to 3 hours a day. On a lead in the street & off the lead in our garden & the garden of our very kind neighbours. Sparty requires constant supervision outdoors to prevent him from fighting other cats in the area. This is a job for an Experienced animal handler who loves cats. Sparty is very emotionally vulnerable as well as physically. He hates to be left alone & will cry & cry & walk in a clockwise direction like a caged lion if left on his own too long. If you would enjoy spending up to 3 hours a day outdoors with our beloved Sparty we would be, and Sparty too, so very grateful!
Other regular things we need help with is joining in making dinner 2 times a week, more if you like!
A couple hours of weeding & watering in our garden- once in a week
A couple hours of house cleaning once a week to include one bathroom, bit of vacuuming, whatever needs doing to keep the house looking nice.
If you have any interest in helping us re-fence our back garden to make it a secure sanctuary for Sparty - oh my gosh! I can't tell how much we need this! No real carpentry or building experience is needed for this on your part just a willingness to learn & take it on is all.- but if this is not your thing that's ok too- Sparty is our main concern & some cooking & a bit of cleaning & a bit of gardening will suffice. Equally if you are not interested in doing any cooking but would prefer to do more of the outdoor garden & fencing work brilliant.
If you are a French speaker & willing to be patient with us we would relish the opportunity to start learning French.
You may have talents & passions that I haven't thought of but that we could really use help with - such as you are good at organising Apple computers & photos- which we are rubbish at -
You maybe a daft hand with a sewing machine-
As long as you are willing to put Sparty first & give him 3 hours a day of your attention & once a week 2 hours cleaning we are quite flexible about what the other couple of hours daily help we need.
Sunday & either Saturday or Monday are yours to enjoy as you wish- we are about 40 minutes on the bus from central Bristol & we also have a local train which is very cheap to ride & goes to the really interesting parts of Bristol where you can view some of the best graffiti & mural art anywhere! Bath is an easy & affordable day trip by train too. The magical spiritual Glastonbury town with it's natural springs, Tor & unique shops is another affordable day trip as is Cheddar Gorge & the beach at Western Super Mare.

Our house is a rather ordinary 60's style bungalow in suburban Bristol....however.....we have tried to enrich our surroundings by furnishing it with affordable antiques & surrounding it with our overgrown funky garden. We have strawberries, raspberries & taeberries in spring & pears from our tree in autumn. We will hopefully have a good crop of squashes, beets & chard to enjoy later in the year. Our garden also has several giant rosemary bushes, a scattering of lavender bushes, some roses, hollyhocks, nasturtiums & copius weeds!
We can offer you a single room downstairs in the house. If you feel a bit more adventurous ( & it's still summer) or you value a bit more privacy we have a garden room/shed with a proper single bed & comfy mattress that has 2 pairs of French window doors offering a private view of trees & sky, a barn door & a skylight. This is built by me from 90% salvaged pallets & doors & I have also used it as a bedroom- obviously if you choose this room it will be yours alone! Although we do store some tools & garden kit in their too but there's plenty of room. This shed has a cat door & you will be sharing it with Cocoa our other lady cat who is rather shy but lovely if you choose this space. I will try to include photos.
With regards to food we try to take turns sharing the cooking between the 3 of us although I intend to be away while you our Workaway volunteer is here. Sometimes though our rotation falls apart as Pete & I struggle with Chronic Fatigue more so myself than Pete but fairly regularly one or the both of us is unable to muster the energy to plan & cook. We of course will provide all the food during your stay but you may need at times to cook & prepare food on your own due to our energy limitations.
We are Flexitarian in our eating habits. We mostly but not always buy organic & free range meats, organic vegetables & fruit. We have a cupboard full of teas, instant & real coffee, organic milk & alternative milk.

For those of you more attracted to the outdoors we have a large park which would take roughly 3-4 hours to walk around right behind our house. There's an interesting walk along the river Avon which is at the bottom of the hill from our house. A bus ride will take you to Clifton Downs & over the famous iconic Brunel Suspension Bridge there's Ashton Gate Park with a healthy deer population.
A day trip can take you to the Somerset Levels where there is a variety of wildlife to enjoy.
A weekend could be easily enjoyed in Cornwall on the wild coast of England or alternatively you could hop the cheap Megabus to London or Liverpool (for Beatle fans) for the weekend.

Expectations we have are: that you will clean up after yourself, respect the need for quiet in the house from 10pm
(ie no loud shouty phone calls on Skype after 10pm) leave your street shoes at the door, love cats! cook a couple evening meals per week ( if you can- not essential if you are busy fixing our fence for example) be polite & friendly with us & our guests. Help with washing up & keeping the kitchen & bathroom tidy & not leave rotting food in the fridge! We also hope that you will tell us if there are any special requirements for you. And please come & talk to us if you have a problem with anything - we want you to enjoy your time with us but it's not always possible to please all the people all of the time - if for any reason after you arrive you are not happy please do not hesitate to talk with us & we try to solve the situation or mutually agree to terminate the stay. We have been hosting students & guests from around the world for nearly 10 years & it's been enjoyable.
