Description
Walk and play with my dog while exploring North Vancouver, Canada - this July (especially the last 2 weeks of July).
I hope to host a traveler in July ONLY (preferably the last 2 weeks of July until August 4), as that is when my daughter (whom I share George with) will be out of country.

I live in beautiful Deep Cove, a seaside suburb of Vancouver, British Columbia. Steps away from the ocean(swimming and kayaking), hiking on mountain trails(Mount Seymour and the famous Quarry Rock Lookout)

I am a shift worker looking for someone to walk my dog (that has huge exercise needs)when I work shift work. I hope to host a workawayer for 2-3 weeks at a time. I’m also hoping to host someone who likes interior painting and is able to do it well (because that’s a task I don’t like and I am also not very good at it). A little yard work would also be appreciated.

I am a friendly and sociable individual who enjoys sharing travel stories and helping others practice English (or I can practice my limited knowledge of other languages with other travellers). I would be happy to show hiking trails in the forest where I live to a traveller. I also LOVE to cook and feed people.
Help
I have a 50 lb 6 year old coonhound mix called George. He is very high energy and I would prefer that he is walked on trails, yet kept on a long leash (I will provide a 100 ft leash) as he may not recall to someone he doesn’t know well. I would prefer that he gets out for at least an hour or more a day.
Therefore it is very important for any traveller who chooses this assignment to be comfortable with dogs and have some experience with them. I also would like the person or persons I host to enjoy the outdoors, rain or shine.
Some small cleaning tasks and a bit of yard work (cutting grass, watering plants, minor weeding, planting some things), small interior painting jobs as well.

I speak a very small amount of German, Spanish and Italian and would enjoy increasing my knowledge of these languages.
Accommodation
A private bedroom and bathroom will be provided as well as full use of my backyard with sun deck and gazebo for outdoor leisure. Although I don’t cook every day due to my shift work, there will always be food and ready made meals available to consume when convenient for a traveller.
What else ...
I live five minutes away from Deep Cove Beach and Quarry Rock Hike, fifteen minutes away from Cates Park Beach and Mount Seymour (hiking and mountain biking). There is a bus stop three minutes away. Downtown Vancouver is 45 minutes away by bus (2 buses and a small ferry-Seabus)

My experience at Astrid's house for the month of June will be regarded as one of the most fond stays that I have had during my year's holiday across Canada. Astrid is a fascinating, intelligent and witty woman, who manages to find new ways to be productive during her days than I ever could. Astrid works twelve hour shifts in the local maternity… read more ward, so she is often out of the house, and yet her clear instructions and extremely manageable workload issued to me per day made me feel at ease, even when she wasn't around to give me pointers in the moment. Did I mention how good of a cook she is? Visit and taste for yourself!

A typical day had me working around four to five hours, usually beginning with walking the two dogs separately in the morning, before having a spot of lunch, and taking care of some practical matters around her house. Frankly, the house is in great nick already, so no major tradesman's skills were required. If you have even a lick of sense about painting, weeding, planting, watering, landscaping and dog sitting, you'll find this place a great place to stay.

Her family and boyfriend, Rod, are funny and insightful people to joke around with and talk whatever comes to your mind. Typically, you have the house to yourself most mornings and afternoons, so be prepared to make your own fun! Exploring the city is easy from Deep Cove, with bus access to Phibbs Exchange, the Seabus and more. When Astrid was off work, she offered to take me on many beautiful hikes, trips into town, and even for ice cream once in a while. Oh, and she's keen to show her skills and teach them to you. Ever wanted to learn more about working as a medical professional? She was happy to demonstrate all sorts of tools and tips of the trade, along with some hilarious anecdotes from her time working as one. She even taught me how to revive an old favourite recipe from home: Irish style soda bread! Her cooking skills made me feel as if I was tasting what my gran would have served back home. She is a local resident of Vancouver, born and raised. Feel free to ask her about the city, she typically has a recommendation to offer!

The house is far from spartan; you have access to all the amenities. A good shower, reliable WiFi, an electric bike with storage space, a double bed, most of whatever is in the fridge that day, and above all - two adorable dogs to dote over.

I cannot recommend coming over to Deep Cove to visit Astrid and Co. enough. This place makes a great first Workaway, or - like me - a final stay in your trip. There's no better way to embrace a relaxed life in Vancouver than here! I was her first person she hosted, but she had the whole Workaway routine licked down, like she had been doing this for years. I'm honoured to have been able to work alongside the people and pets at this home!
