I spent 7 incredible weeks with Ana, Jesse, and Emilia on beautiful Bowen Island, and it was truly a special experience. From the very beginning, I felt warmly welcomed and truly part of the household – whether it was sitting at the dining table together or simply joining them on their outings, I always felt included.

Their 5-year-old daughter, Emilia, is one of a kind! She is energetic, observant, very clever, funny, and loving and outgoing - It is easy to have a good time with her even tough you just met.
When she’s in a moody mood, I found that humor was the best way to connect with her. We truly bonded, and I’m going to miss her so much. A few days have been long and require patience but it's in those small moments of connection that it really paid off!!
The dogs, Flo and Camilla, are energetic and strong-willed, but also very loving (especially Flo, who absolutely loves affection and cuddles). They add such a joyful energy to the home.
Ana, the mom, is a really special person. I loved our conversations on all kinds of topics – she is empathetic, intelligent, passionate, and disciplined. She has great taste in music, and I truly admire her.
I feel inspired by her and am very grateful for getting to know her and learning about the way she goes through life…
Jesse and Ana have a strong work ethic. You will have plenty of free time, as Ana mostly comes back in the evenings, and Jesse is sometimes only around on weekends due to his job in the city. Emilia comes back from school around 3 PM.
My tasks mostly involved helping around the house (keeping the kitchen clean, emptying the dishwasher, vacuuming, and occasionally preparing dinner), as well as babysitting (mostly creative playtime with Emilia).
The family shares a great sense of humor and a loving way of interacting with each other, which made the atmosphere even more enjoyable.
The island itself is peaceful and beautiful. Just stepping outside the house, you’re surrounded by trees, and it's only a 10-minute walk to the beach! It’s very quiet here, and to get to the village, you’ll need a car. Communication is key – Ana often gave me rides to the ferry terminal or took me to Vancouver when she worked in the city.
Weekends were always free for me, which gave me the chance to go to Vancouver twice a week. They were even generous enough to lend me their car at times, though typically both cars were needed for their work.
Another thing I really appreciated was that, even though they all eat meat, they always made sure to offer plant-based alternatives at every meal for me. I truly respect this thoughtful gesture and don’t take it for granted.
Living with this wonderful family was an experience I will never forget. I learned so much, and I am deeply grateful for the kindness, support, and warmth they shared with me. I will always cherish this time.
Thank you again for everything – I hope our paths cross again in the future.

Even though the house was a bit farther from the village, there was always a way to get a ride or borrow the car, which allowed me to visit friends on the island or in Vancouver during my free time. But also the nature around is really beautiful, and I loved exploring it in my free time. From the beginning, I truly felt like part of the family, and we had many great experiences together. Whether it was Christmas, visiting family on Gabriola Island, skiing, ice skating or other trips in the city or on the island, I always had a great time with them.

Emilia is such a joy to be around she is smart and caring and very open to loving new people fiercely. She gives the best hugs!!! Ana is an incredible mother and has given the home a very peaceful and welcoming energy. She's always helping me do everything I want to experience like hiking, beach days, bungee jumping, going out dancing in the city, yoga classes, trying new restaurants, and exploring new places. They even took me to their family's island for a weekend trip! The tiny island of Bowen is so precious with trails literally everywhere. Walking to the beach is 10 min and a stunning walk. Lots of free time to explore and just have me-time. I also worked part time online while staying here and had zero issues with wifi or a space to work or even time restraints. The dogs are sweethearts too.
