    Description

    ACCESS BY BOAT ONLY

Our location sits deep within the rainforest at the foothills of the Bengoh Range National Park in Ulu Kuching, Sarawak. Access is by boat for around 40 minutes, followed by a 50 minute jungle hike. We are remote, off grid and largely self reliant. Life here is shaped by community and practical Bidayuh village living.

    ALL SUPPLIES ARE CARRIED IN

Everything is carried in by hand. Volunteers are expected to help transport supplies alongside their own luggage, keep personal spaces clean, support shared areas and take part in general upkeep of the homestead. This includes sweeping, basic maintenance and daily care of the environment.

    VOLUNTEER REALITY

This is a remote working environment. We also host high end travel guests at times, but volunteer stays are different in nature. Volunteers are here to contribute, learn and take part in the daily work that keeps the place functioning.

    PHYSICALLY DEMARDING

Nothing here is effortless. The environment is physically demanding, weather changes quickly and most tasks require practical involvement and persistence. Volunteers are expected to be active participants in general labour, building support, carrying materials, cleaning, maintenance and assisting ongoing projects as needed.

    HOMESTEAD

We live here in a very remote and secluded jungle setting, so daily life is simple and practical. We do occasionally host high end travel guests, but not on a continuous basis. This is not a hotel or retreat operation, it is a working homestead within a local community environment.

    WE WELCOME PAIRS

This experience is best suited to pairs due to the remote nature of the location. It suits people who want to contribute to something being built over time, who are comfortable with simple living, practical work and close community interaction.

    PHYSICAL WORK

Daily tasks are practical and often physical, forming part of the ongoing work required to build and maintain this place. We value initiative, good judgement and a respectful approach to communal living. Volunteers should be self motivated, adaptable and comfortable working independently when needed.

    CURRENT BULUH BAMBOO BUILD

We are currently developing a community bamboo processing facility and will begin designing and building with bamboo this year. At this stage, work is focused on groundwork and infrastructure. Tasks may include physical labour, site preparation, moving materials, collecting sand, block work and concrete.

For those interested in natural building and hands on construction, this is a meaningful learning environment.

    MEDIA EXPERIENCE

For those contributing through photography, filmmaking or social media, we are looking for thoughtful, in depth documentation that captures something meaningful about the place, the building process and the surrounding community.

    MAXIMUM STAY

    Maximum stay is 1 week.

    IMPEDANCE & SELF RELIANCE

My husband and I are often busy managing ongoing projects, building work and community coordination, so this experience suits people who are comfortable being self directed rather than constantly supervised. Each day usually begins with a clear work plan discussed together in the morning, after which we appreciate people being able to work with independence, initiative and common sense.
