    Description

Hi there! I'm Ed, and together with my partner, Don, we run a sustainable farm nestled in the beautiful countryside of Raglan, Victoria. We proudly offer a safe, inclusive environment and warmly welcome LGBT+ Workawayers to our property. You'll also be sharing the space with our enthusiastic welcoming committee: three large German Shepherds and a spirited Dachshund who secretly runs the show!

Our farm is a dynamic place where our main passion and daily focus is our animals. While we do keep a garden, the vast majority of our time and energy is dedicated to raising and breeding a wide variety of heritage and utility poultry, including chickens, ducks, and quails.

There is always an exciting, hands-on project happening around the property. Depending on when you visit, you might help us with daily animal care, formulate custom animal feeds, tasks on automated lighting and housing systems for the pens, or prepare for our regular weekends selling our poultry and farm goods at the regional markets.

Raglan is a wonderful, peaceful slice of the Pyrenees Shire. We absolutely love the deep connection to the land here. You will love the wide-open spaces and the authentic Australian country lifestyle. Beyond the serenity of the farm, you'll get to experience the vibrant atmosphere of our weekend markets. It’s a fantastic area for anyone who wants to learn hands-on farming techniques, enjoy the company of great animals, and see how a grassroots agricultural business thrives from the ground up!

    Cultural exchange and learning opportunities

A stay with us offers a genuine immersion into the Australian country lifestyle and the thriving grassroots agricultural scene of the Pyrenees Shire.
You will be fully integrated into our daily routine, sharing meals, stories, and the rewarding rhythm of farm life with my partner and me. Beyond the farm gates, you can experience the true heart of our rural community by accompanying us to the regional Markets. These bustling weekend markets are a fantastic cultural immersion - you'll be surrounded by live music, local artisans, and friendly locals. It’s a wonderful opportunity to chat with other regional producers, taste incredible local food, and experience an authentic, tight-knit community spirit firsthand.
If you are interested in small-scale farming, animal husbandry, or self-sufficiency, we have a wealth of practical knowledge to share! You will get hands-on experience in:
Specialized Poultry Care: Learn the ins and outs of managing a diverse flock of utility and heritage birds, understanding their specific needs from incubation through to adult care.
Grassroots Agri-Business: Gain insight into what it actually takes to run a small farm business from the ground up, including market preparation, product presentation, and the logistics of a direct-to-consumer agricultural model.

  • Help

    Help

We are looking for hardworking, physically fit Workawayers to help us with the day-to-day operations of our busy farm. Because our primary focus is on breeding and raising our poultry, the tasks are very hands-on and requires a good level of physical strength and stamina.

    Your main tasks will include:

Daily Animal Care: Feeding, watering, and monitoring the health and well-being of our chickens, ducks, quails, and dogs.

Pen Maintenance: Deep-cleaning and maintaining the animal enclosures. This is physically demanding help that involves shoveling, lifting, and wheelbarrowing to keep the animals' environments healthy and hygienic.

Farm Prep & Projects: Assisting with formulating and mixing our custom animal feeds (which involves lifting heavy bags of grain), helping with housing system upgrades, and getting things ready for our weekend market stalls.

Because you will be contributing to the operations of our agricultural business, we pay the legal Australian hourly wage (under the Pastoral Award) for all hours helped.

  • Accommodation

    Accommodation

At the moment, you will be staying in a comfortable, clean, and secure camp trailer located right here on the property. We provide all the necessary bedding and pillows, so you'll have a cozy place to rest after a busy day on the farm! The accommodation is provided entirely free of charge and is not deducted from your wages. (Note: We are currently working on renovating a dedicated guest bedroom inside the main house, which may be available for future stays!)

    Food and Meals
Since we pay an hourly wage for your help, we offer two flexible options for food, depending on what suits you best:

Self-Catering: You are very welcome to purchase your own groceries and prepare your own meals during your stay.

Provided Meals: If you prefer the convenience of eating with us, we are happy to provide your food and meals. If you choose this option, the cost of the food will simply be offset/deducted from your hourly wage.

We are happy to chat about which option you prefer before you arrive so everything is organized and stress-free!

  • What else ...

    What else ...

Raglan is a beautiful, rural area, which means public transport right to our door is very limited. Having your own car is highly recommended if you want to explore the wider region on your days off. However, if you don't have a vehicle, you can catch the V/Line train to the nearby Beaufort station, and we would be happy to pick you up!

If you love the outdoors, you will be spoiled for choice. We are right on the doorstep of the Mount Buangor State Park, which offers fantastic hiking trails, waterfalls, and sweeping views. The Pyrenees region is also famous for its historic gold-rush towns and excellent local wineries, making for great day trips.

Must Love Dogs: As mentioned, we share our farm with three large German Shepherds and a Dachshund. They are very much a part of our daily lives, so being comfortable and happy around big, energetic dogs is an absolute must!

Languages: We primarily speak English on the farm, but I am also fluent in Mandarin Chinese. If you are a Mandarin speaker, or just someone looking to practice your language skills, you are more than welcome here.

Vibe: We are a hardworking household, but we value a peaceful and relaxed environment at the end of the day. We respect each other's downtime and hope you'll feel right at home with us.
