Sihirli Tohumlar (magic seeds) is an ecological farm project which was launched by the Ertem family in 2011. The farm is located in the northwest part of Turkey about 2 hours away from Istanbul by bus near a village, Küçükyoncalı (3kms) in an oak forest. The project, which started with the aim of growing organic walnuts, has changed direction with the widening of the interests of individuals and contributions of different trainings. A system based on permaculture principles is currently being created. It is a farm that generates its own electricity, where natural housing is built on the basis of volunteering through training by experts. In 2019, besides the production of various vegetables in the garden, corn, barley and siyez (heirloom seeds from Anatolia) wheat production started. We breed free-range chicken. At certain intervals for two years we have been planting a canopy, an understory of fruit trees and bushes and shrubs and there are nearly 300 trees that are already turning into food forests. The purpose of Sihirli Tohumlar is to host and feed the animals that live on the farm, the team that sustains and supports it, and the visitors who come to the farm for the purpose of participating in the trainings during the summer season. The surplus of products are sold in nearby village shops as barter. It is an animal friendly atmosphere with dogs and cats. We have been hosting volunteers from all over the world since two years.

Volunteers will be working on either the natural building project or the farm.
In the farm we are implementing permaculture and organic gardening. This can be an experience of getting to know permaculture design and start improving the knowledge of living in harmony with the nature.
Main permaculture applications you might experience (depending on the time you are joining) are:
chicken tractor, establishing and rotation
coop, chicken rotation
The natural building project is run by a team of experienced builders. Mainly they are teaching volunteers natural building techniques which they can implement after they finish their work as a volunteer.
Main natural building techniques you might experience (depending on the time you are joining) are:
rough earthen plastering
fine earthen plastering
This project could involve children. For more information see our guidelines and tips here.
Natural building; Plastering and finishing of the slip straw building and starting of a volunteer house building, earth based. Woodwork, preparing mixes, raising walls, rough plastering, etc.
Farming; Taking care of the vegetable garden and/or coop. Farming activities that starts with soil preparation, planting to harvesting.
We expect volunteers to work alongside the team with a fixed schedule, and we provide three meals a day + basic accommodation.
There are teepees where certain number of volunteers can stay. Apart from that volunteers have to camp. There is a bathroom/dry toilets building available. We can provide for volunteers tents, mattresses and bedding.
Other buildings on land include a kitchen, a greenhouse and storage buildings.
We provide three meals a day prepared by a cook, all fresh local products with options for vegetarians.
It is a natural environment and there is the possibility of interaction with nature and a big city at the same time as we are located close to a metropol, Istanbul. The farm is also half an hour away from the black sea. We can offer transportation to and from the closest village.
