We have recently bought and are renovating an old property in a lovely rural setting for the use as a Christian retreat.
We are 2 Christians from the UK along with my old and trusty Boxer Staffie cross called Bertie.
The property is a small group of 5 houses/flats at various stages of repair, the first is almost completed. Additionally there is half an acre of overgrown land in need of cultivation.
The location is in a quiet village overlooking a stunning 500 year old aquaduct, and is just 5 minutes away from the town of Tomar, with its castle in the centre, the previous stronghold of the knights templar.
The properties are being renovated in a rustic style to encourage people to throw off the dependency on the mod cons of life and get back to basics.
There is a small community cafe bar in the village.
DIY and building projects
This project could involve children. For more information see our guidelines and tips here.
The property is located in an extremely quiet, peaceful village. It has stunning views, the opportunity to come and be here could help the right person to take a more tranquil look at life and how the Portuguese live.
The town of Tomar is a plethora of historical attractions and events, the enormous castle is a World Heritage site. Everyone who has been he so far has returned home after a fantastic time with a much improved outlook on life and Portugal. Its easy to see why its a wonderful place to live.
There is an abundance of manual type help to do, primarily, painting and strimming. Other help may include assisting in rendering and brickwork depending on ability.
The property is a large one, 3 of the flats are now being worked on, the other 2 will be next year or so, the garden has been unattended for several years, so there is a lot of strumming work to cut it back, then establishing steps and patio areas.
There is lots of painting both inside and out, primarily just whitewashing. All pretty easy stuff, just plenty of it.
Accommodation will be private room, with a comfy bed with access to shower, rooms are basic but clean, tidy and comfortable.
Food will be provided, all meals will be provided. Food will be available and cooking facilities if the workawayer prefers, but it will be encouraged to eat together.
We have bicycles, kayaks and table tennis as activities, transportation to the town can be provided, as public transport is very limited.
We overlook the Pegoes Aqueduct, a 500 year old stunning structure in the valley of Brasoes.
There are wonderful river beaches within 15 minutes.
