  • Description

***Please check our colour-coded calendar before applying! We keep it updated, “red” means we have no occupancy.***

We are a grassroots volunteer Animal Clinic caring for Koh Mak's stray, temple, & owned animals. We are a Non-Profit and rely entirely on donations, volunteers, and sponsorship to carry out our work. Our primary goal is Population Control, through sterilization, vaccination, and education.

We are open to veterinarians who are experienced in working independently and unsupervised. We can waive our 3-week minimum for you. We also accept vet nurses/techs.

We accept some general volunteers, providing daily cleaning & animal care. We love those who are handy & hardworking, can help with DIY, renovation, and are willing to get sweaty. We have foster puppies on-site, who need socialising and enjoy overnight cuddles!

Due to limited occupancy please no pets, families/children, full-time digital nomads, groups of 3+. Partners/friends applying are only accepted in our accommodation exchange on-site if both parties are volunteering. Smoking okay outdoors but not inside provided bedrooms or shared living space. Drug use prohibited. Alcohol use on-site should be limited/casual, and not interfere with work hours.

    Other Requirements:
    - purchase a Thai SIM card with mobile data
    - drive an automatic scooter/or intend to learn (international license NOT required)
    - ask for what you need
    - be prepared to give and receive feedback

All persons should be physically strong and able for the manual labour necessitated by our work. Including but not limited to tasks such as:
    - Kick-starting a scooter
    - Lifting/carrying 20kg bags of dog food
    - Lifting/carrying 19L bottles of refill drinking water
    - Lifting/carrying patients
    - Working (exercising) in a hot/humid/tropical environment

Rainy season is approximately May - October. It may rain for weeks at a time, increase risks while driving, and increase the incidence of mould/mildew. Most resorts, restaurants, activities are closed periodically during this time. This does not change the work that we do, but it may deter your interest in being here during this time or change what supplies you pack. We are not responsible for any material damage. Those with sensitivities/allergies to mould, mildew, dust or dogs/cats should not apply as a volunteer at our facility.

Age preference for 21+. If you are under 21, you are legally considered a minor in Thailand. You may require a formal notarized letter of permission from your parent(s)/guardian(s) in order to obtain a Tourist Visa.

    Cultural exchange and learning opportunities

Our volunteers come from all over the world and have varying levels of education and experience. There are many cultural norms that challenge communication - how you expect to speak and share feedback will be different than someone else. There are also language barriers that may limit depths of connection. We hope to offer a neutral middle-ground to do our best to "meet you where you are" and respect everyone's identity, culture, time, and energy. We hope you will also learn something about yourself while you are here.

We are looking for: Veterinarians, Vet Nurses/Techs

***We are non-hierarchal: Everyone on our team is responsible for the fundamentals of maintaining our facility: cleaning, poo picking, laundry, etc. Surgical volunteers are responsible for preparing the surgical room, picking up patients, packing & sterilizing surgical packs, etc.***

We have an ongoing sterilization program, when we have surgical volunteers.

We have an ongoing preventative program including annual vaccines, monthly preventives, grooming, and wellness checks. Vet volunteers should be prepared for emergent/crisis care primarily: car accidents, poisoning, dog fights. Emergencies are few and far between, but may not be during preferred “work hours”.

You will be expected to participate in trapping/catching of strays, within a margin of safety that is reasonable given your experience and comfort.

We won't always have a doctor and a nurse/tech together (although this is the ideal pairing). It is necessary for you to be experienced in working unsupervised, and have the patience to be able to teach & work with an untrained assistant. For this reason, we do not accept students.

There is plenty of opportunity for swimming, snorkeling, diving, and kayaking. We have minimal elevation, making this an ideal place for runners and cyclists. There is Muay Thai, tennis, restaurants, and bars. You can use your time-off on the island, or island hop nearby.

Transport from Bangkok can be via small plane, private taxi/van, or bus. The trip by land takes 5-8 hours. There is a 1hr speedboat from the adjacent mainland pier.

On-boarding document to be shared prior to your arrival, providing an overview of life on the island and relevant perks and recommendations.
