We have a small farm just outside of Hilo on the Big Island of Hawaii that also serves as the headquarters for a non-profit foundation which supports permaculture projects around the world. We have an aquaponics system and work to implement various permaculture practices and means to be self-sufficient.
Come enjoy the tropical weather of Hawaii and the deep cultural heritage of the island. We are close to Volcano National Park, the town of Pahoa, and many amazing outdoor experiences. Learn about the many uses of plants on the island, ways to harvest bamboo sustainably and build with it, and enjoy fresh papaya and pineapple from right outside your door.
This is a great opportunity for a couple, but singles are invited as well.
We are educational-based. Currently, no food, products, or fish raised on the farm are sold to the public. Volunteers through Workaway will not be asked to help with the two small vacation rental units that we operate. All activities will be based around improving the farm's educational aspects through our non-profit foundation.
There is good cell phone reception and fast internet with plenty of free time for your own adventures or nomadic work.

We offer an introduction to a variety of cultural experiences, from the good old American do-it-yourself attitude, to Hawaiian style family dinners of fresh caught fish, off-road rambling, and guests from around the world who stay in our vacation rentals.
The Hawaiian Islands are full of deep cultural heritage. "Aloha" is the foundation of the culture and is about sharing good intentions and respect for each other. Join us for delicious home cooked meals, adventures around the island, and get to know the Hawaiian culture that infuses all aspects of local life. There are many opportunities close by for other direct cultural connections and experiences as well.
The outdoor environment close by is spectacular and very unique in the world . Pele, the Fire Goddess of Hawaii and a key part of the Hawaiian culture has created some of the newest beaches in the world that are close by, as is Fissure 8 that is still steaming after erupting in the middle of a neighborhood 2 years ago. The waterfalls and jungle landscapes a breathtaking, and there is excellent diving or kayaking on healthy reefs around the island. Swimming with wild dolphins or watching turtles bask in the sun are other possible experiences you can participate in.
We need general help around a small farm: planting and harvesting home garden, help to maintain the aquaponics system, implementing permaculture practices, and keeping the tropical vines from overtaking, We offer opportunities to help with the solar system, harvesting and working with bamboo, and the rain-water catchment system. No real special skills are needed as long as you are interested in learning how to do things if you don't know about. We ask for 20 hours a week in exchange for room and board. One week minimum, 3 months maximum is the usual request. One month is ideal, but we are flexible.
We would be happy to host refugees from Ukraine or other countries in need. Special accommodations will be made for the length of stay for such situations if needed.

We offer a cute Island-style A-Frame studio with a kitchen and bathroom with a hot shower, and queen size bed in the loft. There is a boat-style wooden ladder to the upstairs sleeping area. The studio opens out to a gazebo with a table that is great for eating or computer work. High-speed Wifi reaches most places on the property. A TV is in the living space downstairs.
We offer general food basics and an invitation to share a day-time meal with us if you like on the days you do your work trade. There is fruit available on the land most of the year and occasional tilapia fish from the aquaponics system.
There is good cell phone reception and fast internet. Computer and phone are not provided.
There are many adventures to be had and great sight seeing of jungle paradise close by. There are bicycles to use, a bus system, and we can offer rides sometimes. We are about a 15 minutes drive to Hilo or the other direction to Pahoa where many stores and restaurants and other things to do are happing. A short walk from the farm is a general store with just about anything you can think of and also one of our favorite restaurants.
We would be happy to host refugees.
