Description
Hello everyone :)
I'm Ari from Sukabumi, West Java Indonesia. I am a music teacher, teaching piano and guitar, as well as an English teacher in a local school. Why I'm here now... I love teaching and my goal is to help people in my local area be able to speak English. I'm a big believer in "think globally act locally ".

I'm looking for volunteers excited to help local people learning English in my local area. Some of the help will be at local schools, helping the students practice their English, and some help will be outside of the school, helping with locals looking to improve their language skills.
it's just being a partner in speaking practice.

I can offer:
A stay at my home with my lovely little family and meal three times a day. There is a good room for you and it must be comfortable for you.
You can learn some of the local languages. I speak English, Bahasa Indonesia and Sundanese.
For transportation, I have a motorcycle and bicycle
I can show you the culture in my local area (and let me tell you something... the people here are nice and really respect the guest who come from abroad. You will feel like a superstar here).

Sukabumi is a city surrounded by a region of the same name in the southern foothills of Mount Gede, in West Java, Indonesia, about 80 km (50 mi) south of the national capital, Jakarta. The landscape is very beautiful, filled with rice fields and mountains (it's truly Asia). We are near Pelabuhan Ratu Beach and a long, but doable drive from Ujung Genteng beach. They are both very natural beaches with not too much tourism. Sukabumi has a lot of beautiful places I'm sure you will enjoy.

It's easy to reach Sukabumi. It's located between Jakarta and the big city in west java, Bandung. There are buses and trains running frequently coming to Sukabumi. I can pick you up from the train station and bus station in Sukabumi. If you need more detailed instructions for transportation, feel free to contact me :)

Why does Workaway allow some hosts to charge a fee?

Workaway provides opportunities for non-monetary cultural exchanges where hosts provide food and accommodation in return for help from Workawayers. In some exceptional cases, a small fee/ donation request (typically no more than 5 dollars per day) may be approved for hosts such as registered charities with a history of positive volunteer feedback. We stayed here one week in May and it was an awesome experience with a very caring family. All meals were provided, often home cooked meals and also some local street food. We really got to taste the local flavor from food from Padang to satay. It was more than I could eat sometimes, there was so much food! Akang, Ari's friend who accompanies the… read more volunteers often, knows a lot about the local food and sights like the waterfalls and beaches.

Work is relaxed, especially if you enjoy talking to people. We went around town to different sites where people wanted to practice English with us. These sites consisted of a high school, college, government officials building, and some local family homes. Each site you visit, they will often prepare meals and snacks for you. Our experiences staying with the families, going out to dinner with them, were some of the most rewarding experiences. It is good to know, also, that the schools that we visit have many students who normally can't afford to receive education. They are studying on scholarship or grants to study. The people benefit a lot from your communication and contact with them.

The local people are so friendly. Also, they will often want to take pictures with you as tourists and foreigners are very rare to this area. You will be like a rockstar as Ari says. If you are a musician, it's also an awesome place to go because Ari might take you to the music studio where he teaches and you can jam with him.

The house is a beautiful two-story house which is very clean. It is very simple and easy. In our room we had our own western style toilet, a traditional Indonesian shower, and a double bed. The rest of the house had traditional squatters (Bring Toilet paper!). Everything you need is there, if you need anything else you can just ask Ari, or else there is a shopping center that he can take you to nearby. For internet, he provided us with a modem that connects through our usb drive and we had steady wifi connection throughout.

If you like to tour around in your free time there is plenty of time, just let Ari and Akang know. They took us to the waterfall and a very beautiful beach for our off days! If you just want to relax that's good also, just make sure you let them know the you're ok with staying home. They are such good hosts and always have something exciting planned for you because they want to make sure you don't ever get bored!

Ari has been an incredibly committed host during my time at his place. He and his lovely, very lively family treated me like a family member. I was included in most every activity the family was up to, going out for street food, hanging out in the living room, going on a trip to the beach or meeting friends and further family, who would often meet… read more at their house (there are three kids, 1, 2 and 10 years old from different parts of the family). Within my 10 days in Sukabumi I considered Ari's place my home.
Ari and his family, especially his mother and his cousin Fuzi made shure I was always feeling welcome. Even cooking for a vegetarian was no problem – after some reassurement of what a vegetarian diet consists of. For the time I was there, they even made an effort to share my way of eating and in exchange introduced me to a lot of local cuisine. Also, everybody was keen to learn some English, so with broken Bahasa Indonesia, broken English and a lot of effort we had some very funny conversations.
Ari and his cousin Fuzi took turns in taking care of me. They were always available on the phone when I got lost (which was twice, as not all of Sukabumi's streets have names or are on Google maps) or when I needed help planning my further trip. They always took me to the places I was teaching English and made shure I was safe at all times. They took their responsibility towards me very seriously, although I think backpackers and workawayers like to figure out their new surroundings by themselves.
By inviting people on Workaway for teaching English in local schools or at homes around the neighbourhood, Ari wants to improve the locals' abilities to converse fluently with English speakers and to decrease their shyness towards English speaking strangers. Thus, teaching English was more like talking to the students and the locals, asking them questions or giving answers, not like strict teaching from a schedule. Ari is an extremely talented musician and could live off of teaching music alone, but he wants to give something back to his community by teaching English and opening up the possibility to talk to international guests. In the future he plans to host even more volunteers at the same time.
As Ari's family and neighbourhood are muslim, staying at Sukabumi enabled me to learn about muslim family life from a very direct point of view. For me that was something very new and I learned a lot about muslim values, the closeness within the family and community and the muslim way of life in West Java. Ari's family is very open to different approaches to life though and he and Fuzi are good partners in conversation about this topic. Also, if you have ANY question about local food: Ask Fuzi.
Some practical things that might be interesting to know for future volunteers: If you don't want to get up at 4 in the morning to pray, bring your earplugs; there is a loudspeaker very close to the house. The internet might be slow at times and for Skype you need a little patience. Anything else you need like tissue, shower gel etc. is easy to buy. Be aware that you will be stared at and asked to take a picture almost 24 / 7 if you are a white person – but everybody is really friendly, so don't worry. Also, Ari and Fuzi love to take their guests on tours, so don't be afraid to ask and communicate openly.

By far the biggest highlight of our trip through Asia, not only because the people of sukabumi are so friendly and it's such a safe environment, but living with Ari's amazing family gives you a great insight into java life and the culture they have.
