Hello to everyone,
This is Moses from a women education centre in Bukedea, Uganda. My occupation is the educational development of my nation as well as the improvement of Uganda’s living standards. Especially for women, there is almost no possibility to get education. To change that, me and my team built a learning institution including a health center with various possibilities of academic training for these women.
But the lack of educational capabilities and medical care is not the only issue Uganda has to deal with. There are even bigger problems concerning an insufficient availability of food and the occurrence of malnutrition all over the country.
In close collaboration with students of the Technical University in Aachen (RWTH), Germany, we designed a completely autonomous tank system, containing a plant and aquaculture, to empower villagers to raise and sell their own fish. For realizing that concept, we urgently need a volunteer to help us build up and supervise the system. Project start will be the first of April 2018. To support us, the students of Aachen will travel with you to Bukedea and will stay there for the first two months. Together, we will assemble the system and check for any occurring issues. As soon as everything is running well, they will go back to Germany and will stay in contact via telephone or email.
Your work field will also constitute on tasks around the educational sector of the women development centre as well as medical aspects at the help center. This guarantees you various and challenging tasks and avoids monotony. Uganda used to be a British colony, so mostly everyone speaks English. To guarantee communication you should have adequate English skills and a willingness to achieve a better living standard in Uganda. It would be great if you have a technical understanding but it is not necessary. As mentioned, the students of Aachen will stay in contact and will help you with any occurring questions.
Send me a message if you are interested, hope to see you soon!
Help with Eco project
As mentioned before, we speak English in our village, so there won’t be any communication issues. Uganda is one of the most diverse countries of Africa. Staying here, you will have the possibility to visit national parks with every kind of nature - from huge waterfalls to various animal species. There are bus agencies in the Bukedea-District to help you get around or if there is enough time, we will be able to drive you by car. While living in our village, you will get a great insight in the African culture and the capability to make new friends on the other side of the world.
Your tasks will be diverse. Your main job will be the ongoing maintenance of the solar powered fish tank system, to ensure a trouble-free running of the plant. In addition, we will need your help in the field of educational training of Ugandans and at the Health Center, where we provide medical care to people in need.
English, (students from Enactus Aachen e.V.: German)
In exchange for your work in our centre, we will offer you food (3 meals a day) as well as accommodation. You will stay in our village together with the students of the educational center. The walls consist of concrete to keep it cool during the hot daytime. Every wooden bed is equipped with a mosquito net, to avoid mosquito bites and infectious diseases. Our facilities are clean and on a high African standard. There is no running water but you can draw water from a well and use it in shower cabins and on the toilet. We also have electricity in our houses, to charge for example your cell phone to stay in contact with your family and friends. Since Bukedea is located on a countryside in Africa, there won’t be a WiFi you can use. However, the mobile network is working really well and purchasing a mobile phone contract is cheap compared to European standards.
The students of Aachen are part of an independent organization. In 2016, they already visited Bukedea and built a prototype version of the system. You can find pictures from their visit attached, to get a first impression of how your time in Uganda will be like.
