    Description

Hello, we are a sustainability education hub that aims to pioneer an eco-village in Hulu Langat, Malaysia. We aim to connect people with nature and empower them with the knowledge and skills to build resilient communities in harmony with nature.

Our location is in Sungai Makau, Hulu Langat - which is 30 minutes away from Kuala Lumpur City Center and the farm measured 2.6 acres complete with facilities such as a volunteer's shelter, multipurpose hall, clean showers, and more.

What we love most about our farm is the story of transformation of a disused exotic animal breeding farm in Hulu Langat into a showcase for eco-friendly farming and biodiversity conservation. Where once the land had been depleted, we set out to restore the health of the soil and surrounding habitat through regenerative agriculture principles. By adopting practices like crop rotation, composting and conservation tillage, we were able to revitalize the degraded farmland. As the land healed, wildlife gradually returned to the area.

The neighbourhood is a small agriculture zone with many fishing ponds and orchards around the location. In the morning, the mist shrouds the place to keep it cool. The locals around here are chill, taking life easy and doing small business from their homes. There are also many hotsprings and rivers in the district.

  • Cultural exchange and learning opportunities

    Cultural exchange and learning opportunities

We organise various projects and events that involve improving the lives of our beneficiaries or saving the environment through soil regeneration. Our culture is very community-based, meaning that at anytime, there are at least 3 different groups from different organisations who are involved in a project.

For example, we are collaborating with 2 other organizations in teaching traditional Qigong practice to the seniors in our neighboring old folks home. Thus, Workawayers have plenty of opportunities to make new friends, form new core memories, and get involved with meaningful activities that have positive impact on the world.

The main skills and knowledge we can share with Workawayers would be centered around biodiversity conservation in the area of food agriculture. Whether it is permaculture, regenerative agriculture, or traditional organic farming methods, you can rest assured knowing that we will help you understand the food chain and nutrient cycle. You will also get to know the local species of medicinal herbs that are significant to our cultures.

What we hope to learn by hosting people from different countries is this; what is sustainability to you? How does your culture enhance wellbeing through community activities? What are somethings we can do better here in Malaysia that your culture is already doing? Let's learn a lot of from one another!

  • Help

    Help

We welcome volunteers from all walks of life, educational background, professional industry, and more. For professional working adults with computer literacy and proficiency, we welcome assistance in the area of skill development for our community and execution of workshops. For example, if our workshop is centered round teaching kids about nature, then we will need assistance in monitoring the children during the program.

In another example, if the volunteer is skilled in dancing and arts, the volunteer is invited to brainstorm with us on conducting dance workshops, or teaching the seniors in our local old folks' home how to dance.

Other than workshops, we need plenty of helping hands with farm work and maintenance of our small, humble farm. These help include weeding, seeding, harvesting, etc.

Do you have something to offer that would make Hulu Langat a happier, livelier place? Come and contribute your skills and enthusiasm!

  • Accommodation

    Accommodation

We have dedicated rooms for volunteers with 2 single beds each, and we also have a shared dormitory for 4 pax. Our location is equipped with a large kitchen complete with water dispenser, kettle, cooking station, and more. Workawayers are free to cook rice and vegetables harvested around the farm as meals. We also provide eggs and sauces for you to experiment with cooking! We have limited selection of coffee and tea, so we encourage you to pack your own favourite instant beverage!

  • What else ...

    What else ...

The ride-sharing app in Malaysia is GRAB. You can GRAB a car to take you to the nearby supermarkets to buy groceries and other things. Our farm is about a 30 minutes drive away from the city, so if you want to visit the city center, you may indicate that in your GRAB app. However, do bear in mind that due to our rural location, it is not as easy to hail a ride here compared to when you are in the city.

There are self-service laundromats in a small town located just a 15-minute drive from our farm too, on top of other small sundry shops. But of course, we have washing machines in our laundry room here in the farm for your convenience as well.

Please also expect the WIFI here to be a little unsteady since we're surrounded by trees in the hills. :)

Alternatively, you can join us whenever we drive out to visit the hotsprings and forest reserves!

    Can host digital nomads

We have a few digital nomads currently living with us - and the number one thing they want you to know is to manage your expectations about the Internet in here. On some occasions, the speed is GREAT - you can do video conferences, send large files, and even watch a movie on hi-res. But sometimes, at random, the line is ultra slow - and this seems to be random. So if your work requires high-speed Internet round the clock where you are expected by your employers to be always available, our Internet speed may not be ideal

We love animals - we have 3 dogs, a duck, plenty of tortoises, and some domesticated cats that belong to our workers. However, please do bear in mind that pets are not allowed indoors!
