    Description

My husband and I are retired educators. We have a half an acre that we would like to develop into a better gardening area. We are seniors and our property is on a slope in two directions. The work would involve cleaning some areas of blackberry vines, small weed maples and other invasive species and other gardening activities. We are working on saving a bank that is eroding as well. We have one fenced in area with fruit trees and we would like to do some raised bed gardening in this area.
We live on a small Gulf Island on the coast of BC, (Thetis Island) in a very vibrant community. There are already wwoffers and other Work Away , workers on this island. So, besides relating to us, the individual or couple would have peers to socialize with. There are wonderful hiking trails all over the island, social events in the community where everyone is welcome and a rich sea life surrounds the island. Swimming and boating, biking, Pickle Ball and Tennis are other recreational activities.
We would love having workaway individuals or a couple as we have already travelled in many places in the world and we really enjoy meeting and relating to younger adults who are exploring the world. We find young people traveling have a wonderful positive energy and we can learn so much from them and also share our life experiences with them.
We have an area of the house where the individuals have their own space, with their own private bathroom. We would have two beds in this space.
I also love to cook and make all my own Artisan bread and other breads. And I would be happy to share the kitchen if others would like to cook, or share my own personal recipes.

    Cultural exchange and learning opportunities

There are many local events in the summer time on Thetis Island as well as other wwoffers and Home Away workers, that they can meet. There are many environmental seminars and workshops on Thetis Island. There are wonderful hiking trails and a large area of Nature Conservancy on Thetis Island that we can share with the workers.
We can share all our conservations skills, organic gardening, and cooking skills. We both play the ukulele and my husband plays the guitar as well. So, we would love to share music. My husband speaks German and we both have a basic knowledge of French but we would love to learn more. We would be happy to share in other cultural as well. We have travelled the world but of course there are many places we have not been and we would love to learn more about the culture of our workers. We are continuous learners who love to share our culture and learn about other cultures.

Cleaning invasive plants, on a slope, weeding, developing raised bed gardens, helping us plant and protect an area that is eroding. Helping us set up passive irrigation systems. We will work them as much as we can. We can certainly share any skills we have with our workers. We have been long time gardeners, we have already been planting on the eroding bank and adding organic nutrients and we will continue to do this with help. We collect rainwater off of our roof all year and we have outbuildings where will be collecting rainwater in barrels and we use this for gardening as well as two large 5000 gallon water tanks that service water for our house and garden.
We also compost all our food waste and use this for our gardens. In the summer we often have drought conditions, so learning to conserve and protect our soil is very important. We also get manure from a local farmer to mix with our compost.
We also have a small cabin that needs cedar boards put up and other carpentry tasks.

We will have a part of our house with 2 beds and a full bathroom set aside for the worker or workers. We cook a variety of foods. We are not vegetarian but we do eat some vegetarian meals. We make all our own bread and do a lot of baking. We buy as much local and organic produce and meat as can and we hope to be growing a lot of organic produce. We also grow herbs etc. in pots of our deck.

There is a ferry to Chemainus which is the closest town to us on Vancouver Island. We are a 4 minute walk from our home to the ferry. There is a local coffee shop and Thetis Island Marina that is about a 5 minute walk away. We have two road bikes that workers can use as well. We are a 5 minute walk from the Thetis Island Community Hall, where there s a library and a large community centre a tennis court and a pickle ball court. There is another Pub Marina which serves good meals and is a 10 minute walk from our home. Swimming is a five minute walk to the Government dock. There are markets on Saturday and they are both within easy walking distance from our home. In terms of meals, I will make dinner but breakfast and lunch will be on your own. We will have home made granola, muffins, yogurt and other things available for breakfast. .And other things available for lunch. The workers can make their own breakfast and lunch and they will be responsible for cleaning up after the meals. We will cook dinner and the workers can help with the clean up.
