*️️️️️️️️️*️️️️️️️️️ CURRENTLY SEEKING - Workaways for February through May 2019 *️️️️️️️️️️️*️️️️️️️️️️️

Aloha, we are looking for a couple or two workers or a worker that enjoy solitude due to our location. We do not live on a typical farm, but we do have 3 acres the we are developing into sustainable living.

We are Mike, Cheryl and our small dog, Griffon living in a remote area of Ocean View, a small community with three grocery stores and gas stations, a hardware store, other shops and restaurants. We share in this adventure to teach and help volunteers learn about our area of the Big Island.

Our town is not a very touristy, many stop for supplies or eat at our local restaurants when heading to or from South Point, Volcano, Hilo or Kona. The landscape around our home is all lava, so no grass. Some say, It looks like we live on the moon.

We have the main house and two guest houses (ohanas) on lava surrounded by mulch on the ground. The property is completely off grid and our water source from the rain we collect. For our workaways, we have a private workaway house next to the bunkhouse. Please see "Accommodation"

Our property has an ocean view spanning 25 plus miles of ocean and to infinity straight ahead. To the left, South Point and right is Road to the Sea. Below us is a Pohue bay with a sandy beach accessible by hiking about 3 miles across a nice path in lava with petroglyphs. The lava flow is from 1856, so not much vegetation.

Again, the properties are COMPLETELY off grid and on restricted water supply. We use wind turbines and solar to supply our electric. Computers, iPad, phone devices are rechargeable. Washer and WIFI provided, the dryer is the wind on the close line.

Also seeking talented artists to paint murals on the side of the houses and decorate the inside of the house with island life paintings. Also volunteers willing to learn new ways of doing projects from electric, plumbing, painting and the science of brewing beer.

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
PLEASE NOTE - We get many request for Oahu area. We are NOT ON the island of OAHU where Waikiki Beach and Honolulu is located.

Learn how the locals live in Hawaii. Enjoy the culture of the people in Ocean View and explore Hilo's rich historical past. Kaʻū is the southernmost district of Hawaii County, Hawaii, located on the island of Hawaiʻi.
Kaʻū is one of the six original districts of Hawaii on the island. It includes the areas of South Point (Ka Lae), Hawaiian Ocean View Estates (HOVE), Hawaiian Ocean View Ranchos (HOVR), now together known as Ocean View. The district contains much of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, including the volcanoes Kīlauea and Mauna Loa, and Punaluʻu Black Sand Beach, Papakōlea (Green Sand) Beach and Kamilo Beach. To the east of Kaʻū is the Puna District, and to the west is the South Kona District. Sugar cane was a large crop until 1996. Now coffee is growing in importance, with the Kaʻū Coffee Festival held in Pāhala. The southernmost point of the US is at Ka Lae Point in the Kaʻū District.

Current Projects: Volunteers would help with grooming the gravel road, painting, gardening, make concrete pavers and footers, weeding (usually pulling up unwanted grass pods), property maintenance and building, small construction projects, moving lava rocks, and learning about being off grid by maintaining batteries, solar panels, & wind turbines, and DC lighting. Also learning the science of brewing beer. Sometimes there are community projects (like beach clean up) we get involved in, it's a great way to help and meet others in the neighborhood.

Aquaponics: Where fish and vegetable plants are grown together in a controlled environment in our shade house. We are in the beginning stages of developing our own system for vegetables and fruit. Volunteers would learn how the system works, help move plants, plant new ones and learn what plants grow in a media or water only.

Wind & Solar Powered: All electric power is generated by solar panels and wind turbines and stored in a bank of batteries. Volunteers would learn how the system works, test the batteries for efficiency, help keep the batteries clean and refresh the water in the batteries.

Artistry: There are many surfaces for you to paint and create your next masterpiece. We love when workaways leave their personal touch on a wall, floor, doors, and ceilings. The bunkhouse is in need of an artist's love. It's a clean surface in need of paintings of the island. You'll paint directly onto wood surfaces.

Brewing Beer Project : We make our beer in a very traditional "Homebrew" style, paying more attention to flavor than appearance. It's also important to note that the project is "off grid".. We have a small, 10 gallon (maximum), gravity driven system with the ability to do step-mash's and decoctions. Beer is enjoyed by us and visitors, it’s not for sale. Volunteers would spend time brewing with Mike, learning all there is to brewing beer.

Griffon: Are you a dog lover?? Our dog Griffon enjoys visitors and his rest time. We also rely on our volunteers to watch Griffon on some occasions when we need to go to town. He suffers from separation anxiety. Usually, right after we leave Griffon alone, he will display distress behaviors of trying to escape (tearing up everything to get out) and sometimes vomits. Cuddling with G is what he enjoys and knowing your not leaving him also. He also enjoys walks with our workdays.

Remote living: Couple or two volunteers or a volunteer that enjoy solitude due to our location being very remote. This would best suit volunteers who like being in a "remote area" of the Big Island. We live in Ocean View 1.5 hours from the big towns of Hilo and Kona. We live 2 miles down an incline from 3 grocery stores and gas stations, restaurants, a swap meet every Saturday and 25 minutes from South Point. Closes town is Naalehu. Home to many restaurants and Punalu`u Bake Shop. We are also located an hour from the National Volcano Park. Volunteers can use the Heleon bus to go to Hilo, Kona or circle the island, we can give you a lift up the hill to catch the bus and pick you up on your return.

Cooking: We enjoy cooking but also enjoy when volunteers come in and take over our kitchen. Help us cook meals and teaching us new ways to cook and new foods. We use the stove, oven, grill and Pit Boss (similar to a green egg). The Pit Boss makes the best pizzas, breads, low and slow meats and other meals.

Sharing: We encourage volunteers to bring their talents and share with us. Our place has been host to artist, musicians, construction engineers, amateur chief and around the world travelers. Mike and Cheryl are also looking for someone to teach them Spanish.

    Accommodations

Workaways will stay in our new Workaway cabin. The private room has a bathroom and deck to enjoy your private time. You will share a shower & kitchen is equipped with stove top, refrigerator, sink & cooking tools in the bunk house attached to cabin.
Water source from rain and from hauled water so we encourage everyone to restrict the water usage.

The entire property is off grid, electric generated by solar and wind. So NO blow dryers, curling irons, hair straighteners, microwave, toaster oven, etc.

When working with Cheryl & Mike, a meal is provided that day by volunteers or Cheryl & Mike. Other meals can be prepared in the hostel kitchen until your kitchen is complete.

Griffon is our lovable cuddle pet. He enjoys playing and his walks. He has separation anxiety from us, so we can never leave him alone. Our workaways enjoy watching him when we go to town.
