** WE ARE IMPROVING WINTER ACCOMMODATION FOR VOLUNTEERS FROM OCTOBER 2016 ONWARD SO NO VOLUNTEER POSITIONS AVAILABLE AT THE MOMENT**
My name is Lee , I've been a skipper of sailing boats and boat restorer my whole life. About 10 years ago I bought myself a 1930's last living original Cornish Lugger (square sailed ex wooden fishing boat) to restore and sail which geared me even more towards a simpler traditional life, more in harmony with nature, so 3 years ago I bought 5 acres of land I fell in love with while sailing on Bere Island, South West Ireland to become fully sustainable and self sufficient in food, power and shelter.
I am an avid recycler, so I have been transporting building materials from my previous home in Cornwall UK, and sourcing materials locally here in Ireland to build humble, innovative, Eco homes and workshops. I am passionate about sailing, building and engineering, metalworking, woodwork, gardening, art and design.
I am looking for volunteers and caretakers while I go away to help me create an idyllic sustainable home here, where we share the food produced from the land and build imaginative natural shelters. I am currently clearing and draining plots of land to grow food and erect ex-life raft tents for volunteer luxury camping accommodation.
A few years ago I built a two floor yurt on the land and hope to finish the interior this winter. Someone who wants to look after the land for long term basis would be very comfortable in here, would suit artistic type looking for rural quiet escape.
Volunteers with any experience welcome to come help with land clearing, stone wall building, tent building, fishing, gardening etc. but its a basis of mutual respect and hard work in exchange for accommodation and lots of access to toys like dingys, kayaks, canoes on this beautiful island. I will be foraging lots of food this autumn and fishing under sail. Lobster, prawns, crab, mackerel are regularly on the menu here! I hope to get chickens, pigs and bees next!
As I don't have lots of vegetables growing yet volunteers will have to contribute to their own food costs.
easiest way is to get to closest town here, Castletownbere.
Hope to meet great new people soon!
