We have a family-run lodge in Zanzibar, the island off Tanzania. We are an eco-lodge , trying our best to respect the local environment and give back to our local community while offering tourists an authentic Zanzibari experience. One of our favourite things about working in our lodge is meeting people from all over the world. We have also enjoyed hosting some short-term volunteers, a really great way to learn about other cultures.
My family includes Haji, the owner of the lodge, a charismatic local Zanzibari, myself who is a nature loving Italian living here for over 10 years and our four children, Ali, Rama, Omar and Malik, who love playing in our garden and of course football. We live here at the lodge and so it really gives off a homely atmosphere.

Our lodge is located within Chuini village, the owner is a local, we work with locals, each afternoon locals come to enjoy the beach at our doorstep. As such there are many opportunities for you to learn about Zanzibari culture and perhaps even learn and practice Swahili language. Haji is a great host who loves sharing stories and pastimes of Zanzibar, traditions of the people and is very proud to show you our village and the surrounding areas. If food is an interest of yours you will enjoy our traditional Zanzibari meals and are welcome to observe the cooks in the kitchen or perhaps even have a cooking lesson. You may also be enticed to join some local fishermen on one of their expeditions, or simply enjoy the view from our banda everyday fishermen are working on their boats.
Zanzibar is a beautiful place to live for many reasons, however one thing lacking is medical professionals with extensive knowledge and skills. My son Malik has slight hemiplegia, believed to have been caused by a stroke in the womb and as a result has limited use of his right leg and arm. We are seeking a physiotherapist and/or occupational therapist to join us to build Malik's strength and to leave with us exercises we can easily incorporate into his daily routine for the future.
In the past Malik had some physiotherapy in Italy but here in Zanzibar unfortunately they were physiotherapists just passing through and therefore there was nobody to offer continuous therapy sessions. To have someone live at the lodge and work on daily exercises with Malik would be so helpful, would open up more opportunities to him. As this will not take up all your time each day, it would also be appreciated if you help with some other things around the lodge (staff supervision and support).
We are also seeking volunteers to assist with some admin duties and perhaps even English/French/Italian/Chinese lessons for our kids/staff. Kids are homeschooling (Year6 British) so we are happy to host teachers or facilitators (a degree and knowledge in technology are required).
Or maybe you have some skills to run a class at a a small community school operating on an international curriculum (english, math art or sports activities), tuition in a local education centre or support in a local nursery school (business visa is required).
A flexible can-do attitude is a must. You may even have another skill that would be useful. Being an island there is limited resources so likely you have some knowledge and skills that would be really beneficial here.
English, Swahili, Italian
Our volunteer will have a big room at the lodge provided with comfortable beds, wardrobe, fan as well as an ensuite. All meals will be provided, and are a mix of Zanzibari and Italian cuisine made by our cook. Each day fresh meals are prepared for the family, for which you can join also. You can access all facilities of the lodge while you stay with us: internet, relaxing areas, tours, meeting room, pool, for a quiet work space and we are right on the beach.
The lodge is situated 30 minutes by car from Stonetown where there is cinemas, shopping, cafes and restaurants for you to enjoy a break. Zanzibar although an island is not as small as you think and the east and west coast differ to each other. On your day off explore the island with snorkeling, visit the butterfly centre or Jozani forest, venture to small islands or sandbanks or simply relax on a different stretch of beach. We are in the spice farm area which you can cycle to if you like to taste the many fruits and spices of Zanzibar. You would be welcome to join our drivers to go to town, otherwise a short walk to the main road and you can take a local bus.
Previous volunteers have become part of our family, joining us on trips into town, family outings and sharing meals with our family. We are relaxed people though and in your spare time you are most welcome to do as you please.
