  • Description

We have a family-run lodge in Zanzibar, an island off Tanzania. We are an eco-lodge, trying our best to respect the local environment and give back to our local community while offering tourists an authentic Zanzibari experience. One of our favourite things about working in our lodge is meeting people from all over the world. We have also enjoyed hosting some short-term volunteers, a really great way to learn about other cultures.

My family includes Haji, the lodge's owner, a charismatic local Zanzibari, myself who is an Italian nature and healthy nutrition lover living here for over 10 years, our four children, football passionate, and some dogs and cats. We live here at the lodge and so it really gives off a homely atmosphere.

We would like to meet responsible people who share our passions and deeply respect the island with its people and culture and the labour as an effort to thrive.

Our lodge is located within Chuini village, the owner is a local, we work with locals, each afternoon locals come to enjoy the beach at our doorstep. As such there are many opportunities for you to learn about Zanzibari culture and perhaps even learn and practice Swahili language. Haji is a great host who loves sharing stories and pastimes of Zanzibar, traditions of the people and is very proud to show you our village and the surrounding areas. If food is an interest of yours you will enjoy our traditional Zanzibari meals and are welcome to observe the cooks in the kitchen or perhaps even have a cooking lesson. You may also be enticed to join some local fishermen on one of their expeditions, or simply enjoy the view from our banda everyday fishermen are working on their boats.

  • Help

Zanzibar is a beautiful place to live for many reasons, however, one thing lacking is medical professionals with extensive knowledge and skills. My son Malik is affected by slight hemiplegia, believed to have been caused by a stroke in the womb. As a result, he has limited use of his right leg and arm. We are seeking physiotherapists, occupational therapists holistic body therapists to join us to build Malik's body and mental strength. Exercises and recommendations are needed to be incorporated into his daily routine for the future.

Malika and Omar are homeschooling (Year7 British) so we are also happy to host teachers or facilitators (a degree and knowledge in technology are required and a minimum stay of 1 school term) to support them in school and extra projects, like art, technology, writing skills.

We are also seeking volunteers to assist with some admin duties and perhaps even English/French/Spanish/Russian and art lessons for our kids and staff.

In addition, help with the daily routine at the lodge is always needed, if you have already some experience. We are happy to host social network specialists and photographers only with proved experience.

A flexible can-do attitude is a must. You may even have another skill that would be useful. Being an island there are limited resources so likely you have some knowledge and skills that would be really beneficial here.

Lastly but crucial, our family is ready and happy to host only responsible and committed travellers. Please double-check with yourself if you just need to party and meet other people. Please refrain to ask for accommodation if you're travelling only for fun. We require commitment and respect, giving back the lodge's facility and comfort, a safe and warm environment, good food and a nice room.
One week trial period may be necessary to know each other, therefore we may shorten your stay if we don't feel comfortable with you.

Our volunteer will have a big room at the lodge provided with comfortable beds, wardrobe, fan as well as an ensuite. All meals will be provided, and are a mix of Zanzibari and Italian cuisine made by our cook. Each day fresh meals are prepared for the family, for which you can join also. You can access all facilities of the lodge while you stay with us: basic internet (you may want to have your bundle though), relaxing areas, tours, meeting room, pool, for a quiet workspace and we are right on the beach.

What's not covered by us: your tourist visa for Tanzania (3 months validity), Zanzibar Revenue tourist tax of 8usd per day per person (as small hotel category) and infrastructure tax 1usd per day per person. As you know, Zanzibar is a developing touristic destination asking all visitors (including workawayers) to contribute.

    What else ...

The lodge is situated in a quiet rural area but only 30 minutes by car from Stonetown where there is shopping, cafes and restaurants for you to enjoy a break, including some nightlife. Zanzibar although an island is not as small as you think and the east and west coast differ from each other. On your day off exploring the island with snorkelling, visit Masingini or Jozani forest, venture to small islands or sandbanks or simply relax on a different stretch of beach. We are in the spice farm area which you can cycle to if you like to taste the many fruits and spices of Zanzibar. You would be welcome to join our drivers to go to town, otherwise a short walk to the main road and you can take a local bus.

Previous volunteers have become part of our family, joining us on trips into town, family outings and sharing meals with our family. We are relaxed people though and in your spare time, you are most welcome to do as you please.
However, we are happy to host committed travellers that are ready to help our lodge and family thrive. No waste time, please.

We can organise long stays. there's plenty of space to work at - open spaces and a multifunctional room- where wifi is available. The connection is quite good but for extra needs, I'd suggest buying extra MBps through our provider. No connection in the rooms.
