  • Description

I live in a 50 acre enchanted forest in southern Vermont in the United States. My wife and I constructed our forest cabin 12 years ago using native materials in a way to minimally intrude on the the surrounding environment.

My project is to gently re-establish old trails and vistas in the forest and catalogue unique species that reside here. By determining the flora and fauna of this woodland, I hope to better preserve and encourage the growth of the biota that call this place their home.

Workawayers who stay here will learn about forest care and enhancement. They will have comfortable accomodations and excellent foods from local and on-premises sources.

Vermont was the 14th state (and the first state following the American Revolution) to become a part of the United States of America. The early history of the USA was intertwined with events occurring in Vermont. Many.historical and cultural activities are a short trip from southern Vermont. They provide many opportunities to learn about the early days of the republic.

Southern Vermont contains many nature-based learning opportunities as well. National and state forests are nearby and the longest river in New England is a very short distance from this southern Vermont location.

Workawayers will learn to use basic forestry and gardening tools. They will learn methods of species identification and assessment. They will be learning methods for clearing brush from existing parhways. They will be practicing good forestry enhancement methods currently utilized in southern Vermont.

Incorporating local foods into daily meals preparation will be the norm. Learn to make bread, Eastern European dishes and prepare and enjoy forest foods.

The forest cabin located on this property was constructed in 2007. Two private bedrooms are located on the second floor with a shared full bath and loft with forest views. A master suite is located on the first floor. Native hardwoods and stone were used throughout the interior to create a comfortable, open floor plan. The kitchen includes all modern appliances and can support meal preparation for up to 20 dinner guests. A large outdoor deck with awning provides a great dining experience on warm summer evenings.

A full weight/exercise machine room is available in the basement for maintaining good physical condition.

As noted previously, there are many local venues for various tastes. For those who would like an infrequent getaway to major cities, there is train service to New York City (3.5 hours) or a 2 hour drive to downtown Boston.
