Description
My name is Nadja (47) and together with my daughter (10), we live close to the beach in Hout Bay, Cape Town. We overlanded Africa in a Landrover, fell in love with this place, and made it home. We moved from the Netherlands to Cape Town and have settled in well. We've hosted many workawayers before and it's become part of how we live. Every workaway has brought something different to our live and we've remained friends with many of them.
At home we speak Dutch, German and English and are learning Afrikaans.
Fleur goes to school till 2pm, so your time would mainly be afternoons, some evenings, and weekends - flexible around my schedule. That could mean picking her up from school, taking her to surf or swim training, doing arts and crafts, playing lego, cooking together or preparing our family dinner. She's good fun and will declare you her best friend within 5 minutes of meeting you.
What matters most is who you are. I'm looking for someone who's traveled a fair bit and knows how to navigate the world and not just the pretty parts. Someone with a grown-up attitude but a childlike heart. Self-confident, street smart, able to drive, and genuinely up for adventure. You don't need to be a qualified nanny, but you need to be the kind of person a 10-year-old wants to spend her afternoons with and a mother trusts to do so. Ideally we are looking for someone who can stay for a longer period of time, at least 4 weeks and longer if possible.
South Africa is raw, real, and sometimes confronting and that's part of why we love it.
If that excites you more than it scares you, you'll fit right in.
Sounds like your kind of thing?

Cultural exchange and learning opportunities
You'll be living with a family that's done anything but the conventional route. We've overlanded Africa, travelled across Asia, lived in multiple countries, and built a life in a place most people only visit. That means you're not just staying somewhere, but you're stepping into a way of living that's adventurous, international, and very real.
Hout Bay is stunning but it's not a bubble. You'll experience South Africa up close - the beauty, the complexity, the contrasts. You'll surf, hike, explore, and learn what it means to live here rather than pass through.
At home we switch between Dutch, German, and English, and we're learning Afrikaans - so if languages are your thing, you'll pick up more than you expect. Fleur has grown up across continents and holds her own in a conversation with adults, so don't expect small talk. You'll be challenged, entertained, and probably outwitted by a 10-year-old on a regular basis.
If you're looking for a Workaway where you clock in, do your hours, and retreat to your room - this isn't it. But if you want to be part of something, learn from a different pace of life, and leave with stories rather than just stamps in your passport you'll love it here.

Help
I'm looking for someone to be there for Fleur (10) after school - not as a babysitter, but as someone who genuinely engages with her. That means keeping up with her intellectually, being creative together, and matching her energy. She's bright and curious, so she needs someone who can actually hold her attention and challenge her, not just keep her busy.
On a practical level: if you've been doing a project together, you clean up together. If you're back from swimming, towels get hung up. Etc. I'm organised and tidy and I need that to be respected and shared, it's not something I want to chase anyone on. We have a cleaner, but the day-to-day is on all of us.
If you are a confident driver that helps. Note that we drive on the left side of the road.
