ABOUT THE VALLEY... a woodland garden ran on bio-dynamic principles.
The environment is rustic in character, the facilities are totally basic, the atmosphere is magical. Plant life is a mixture of wild and cultivated areas including a winter garden, shrub, herb, herbaceous and rose. The woods consist of mature oaks, chestnut, beech, pine, acer, hornbeam, hazel, rowan and birch, plus rhodo pontica and a few specimen rhodos. There are 2 woodland areas easing up from either side of the valley and a lawn area with raised flower beds and a massive rose cave of Himalayan Musk that joins hands with a Rambling Rector. Pretty special!
There are several (old) wooden huts on the site. One is a summer house where l stay and the other big hut is where Workaways stay. Couples are given priority in 'the hut' or singles stay there there if its available. There is a smaller hut for singles also.
The big hut has a woodburner in it and cooking facilities, the small hut hasn't. lf more than one person is staying then all the cooking and eating is carried out in the big hut, but the sleeping area can be screened off for privacy. lt's never been a problem. Usually there is only one couple on site at a time.
ABOUT ME... l am DIANA. l am an artist working mainly in documentary film and radio. l also write and paint. l'm based between London and the Valley and am not always on site, therefore only very independent minded, reliable, cool headed people willing to work on their own initiative, either individually, in couples or small groups even...could handle being here.
When on site l share in the cooking and provide a nourishing, good evening meal... but not breakfast or lunch. lf l have to go away from site l leave plenty of food supplies for dinner meals that u would then prepare for yourselves.
FACILITIES ON SITE: The Valley has very basic facilities and is definitely not for the weak hearted. lt is however, laid-back, safe and has a touch of wonder about it. There is a very good compost long-drop (toilet), and one outdoor cold tap (we use a hot water boiler for bucket bathes). To be honest, if u r coming to England to learn the language and to have a big social time on your Workaway site....then the Valley would not be suitable. The last thing that happens here is people sitting around teaching each other different languages. lt is a great place for COUPLES to be on their own.
PERIODS OF HELP & STAYS: Work months are from MAY until usually the end of OCTOBER. Work periods are usually 2 weeks but longer stays are possible. This arrangement would be an exchange of living space and electricity. Wood for the burner can be collected on site.
ABOUT THE AREA: The Valley is situated 15 minutes walk to the cliff top and sea and into Cromer town centre. The town used to be famous as a Victorian spa resort. Today it is a well known tourist location and fishing resort with local crab boats, lots of cafes, pubs, shops, a library (with internet), tourist info centre (with internet) a cinema, a working Lighthouse and a Victorian pier with a theatre, cafe and bar, The town is provincial in character, lively in the summer months and pretty quiet during the winter. The highlight on the calendar is an annual Carnival held the 3rd week in August. During the summer months there are very good bootsales and traditional local feats.
The beaches and cliff tops here are beautiful. Cycles can be hired from Cromer. This coastal stretch is a protected nature, wild life and bird reserve and is a walker, painter and writer's paradise.

l am always open to eco-incentives and ideas for creative projects. l am happy if artists/writers/musicians want to help out in the Valley whilst getting on with their own projects so long as the set work hours are fulfilled. Carpentry, construction and chainsaw are great bonus skills and badly needed!
We welcome people who respect the environment, are self-motivated, can do thorough jobs, can spend time on their own if necessary, and also get along with whoever is around.
The help is variable and constantly changes with the seasons; the busy time starts from May. From then on work includes fern pulling, rhodo grubbing out (clearing and pruning), renovation to wooden huts, tree surgery/maintenance (chain sawing but only if u have experience and work at your own risk), strimming, fencing, weeding, dry stone walling. Also needed: railway sleeper steps, a flint and brick wall, rose arbor, a tree-house.
Excessive drinking and loud noise making is definitely OUT, and there is a no-smoking indoor policy.
The help period is 5 hours a day for 5 days a week depending on your length of stay. Length of stays are negotiable: usually between 2 weeks to 1 month (longer stays are negotiable).
lf l go away on work projects then kind, loving and responsible dog-minders are often needed for these periods. lf interetsed l can send u some more pictures by email.
