Description
Nestled in the heart of the breathtaking Wilderness National Park, our hostel and adventure center sits right on the edge of the beautiful Touw River Estuary. Surrounded by forest, water, and incredible wildlife, it’s a place where nature is part of everyday life. With more than 25 years of history, our backpackers has grown into a well-loved and established spot for travelers, adventurers, and volunteers from around the world.
One of the most special things about staying here is how connected we are to the surrounding nature. The famous Kingfisher Trail, one of Wilderness’ most beautiful hikes, begins right outside our driveway and winds its way through lush forest, across wooden boardwalks, and along the riverbanks. Many other walking, hiking, and birdwatching trails also start right from our doorstep, making it easy to explore the incredible national park without even needing a car.
If hiking in the sun feels like too much for the day, there’s always the river. Just a five-minute stroll down the old abandoned railway line next door takes you to a bridge where locals and travelers alike love to jump into the cool, refreshing water of the Touw River — a simple but unforgettable Wilderness experience.
The fairies' home is more than just accommodation — it’s a relaxed and social space where travelers and locals come together to share stories, enjoy nature, and experience the slower rhythm of life in Wilderness. The bar is a favorite hangout for the local community, where many stories are shared around the fire, from across the world.
Every week we host live music nights, which have become a favorite gathering for both visitors and locals. These evenings create a lively, welcoming atmosphere where people connect over great music, good food, and a few drinks.
Whether it’s helping around the hostel, sharing a meal with the team, paddling up the river, enjoying a drink at the bar, or watching the sunset over the mountains, life here is simple, beautiful, and full of adventure — and always shared with good company.

Cultural exchange and learning opportunities
Travellers will have the chance to connect with young adventurers from all over the world, as well as locals from South Africa who stay at our hostel or drop by our popular bar. These interactions create a rich cultural exchange, full of stories, laughs, and new perspectives.
Beyond meeting people, volunteers gain hands-on experience running a busy hostel and adventure centre. From helping with front-of-house operations to joining in on adventure activities and running the bar, travellers will learn the ins and outs of hospitality, event management, and running a community-focused business — all while immersing themselves in the unique rhythms and lifestyle of Wilderness.
It’s an opportunity to learn practical skills, connect across cultures, and grow personally, all in one unforgettable adventure.
Help
We are a vibrant backpackers and adventure centre with a lively bar that draws locals and travellers alike. With live music 2–3 nights a week, our space is always buzzing with good vibes, stories, and laughter. We are looking for enthusiastic volunteers to join our family and help with a variety of tasks — from front of house, to promotion, to assisting with our adventure activities.
Every evening, we prepare a meal for staff and guests. If cooking sparks joy, volunteers are welcome to help, but it is never expected — just a chance to share in the magic of community meals.
Volunteers commit to half a day of help, five days a week, with a minimum one-month stay. In return, we offer comfortable dorm accommodation, all meals, and free use of our kayaks. Plus, there’s plenty of time to explore the backyard playground of Wilderness National Park - a wonderland of forest trails, beach walks, rivers, and excellent fishing.
On the property, you’ll find magical little treasures everywhere: serene forest walks, a well-kept bird hide, a popular bar, pool table and darts, a fire pit to gather around, and a community of friendly people who radiate good vibes.
Beyond the property, adventures extend from kayaking the Touw River to the waterfall, canyoning through epic gorges, horse riding in the forest, paragliding from the Map of Africa viewpoint, all waiting for you to dive in and explore.
This isn’t just volunteering — it’s stepping into a world of adventure, nature, music, and connection, where every day brings something new, magical, and unforgettable.

Accommodation
In winter, volunteers share dorm style rooms, usually with just two or three people per room, creating a warm and friendly space to relax after a day of adventure.
In summer, during our busy season, we set up a large, comfortable military-style tent for volunteers. This allows more hands on deck when we need them most, and the tent can house up to six volunteers, perfect for making new friends in the forest.
Bedding is provided in both winter and summer, so you can rest easy.
What else ...
When helpers have free time, there’s no shortage of ways to explore and enjoy the beauty of Wilderness. Just a short distance away are pristine beaches perfect for swimming, surfing, or simply soaking up the sun. For nature lovers, the adjacent national park offers endless opportunities for hiking, birdwatching, and connecting with the local flora and fauna.
Volunteers can also choose to spend their downtime kayaking along the Touw River, canyoning through nearby gorges, or simply relaxing with a good book in the peaceful surroundings. On occasion, we organise fun day trips to nearby towns and local markets, giving helpers a taste of the wider region.
Life here is also about community and connection. We share all our dinners together as one big family, enjoy each other’s company, and celebrate the simple joys of life in this incredible part of South Africa.
