Our school is a very small private school visioning students in the community will get the kind of great English learning experience like in international schools. It is only a weekend school and we want an expat, a fluent English speaker, to help us teach 4.5 hours per day and one day per week (plus 4.5 hours preparation day per week). In return, we can provide food, accommodation and a small stipend in a way to show our appreciation.
I am the founder of a small school and I started the school last year. I have been teaching English for 15 years and am a teacher as well as a teacher trainer. I got a Fulbright scholarship in 2009 and studied for two and half years in Minnesota in the U.S. for my second Master’s degree in curriculum and instruction. My passion is to make education accessible and language learning fun for students. Students in my neighborhood cannot have an access to international standard education nor have language learning experience. I am giving them the educational experience that they cannot get in their lives before with affordable school fees for them. My place has a lot of small local shops and small shopping centers within 5-minute drives. There are a few small pagodas within 15-minute drives. There is also a nearby train station to go around the city. There is a public hospital within 5-minute walk. There are some public schools, private clinics, and local tea-shops. It is 45-minute drive to downtown area (a bit longer during traffic time) and about 20 minute drive to the airport. In downtown area, there are a lot of things such as museums, food tours, shopping malls, parks, etc. Outside Yangon, within 2-hour drive, there are some villages or natural areas. In my free time, I can sometimes show the volunteer around.
There are 3 paid local staff for administrative tasks. There are two active classrooms with two teachers including me.
This project could involve children. For more information see our guidelines and tips here.
They can learn local culture being immersed in the local community as well as teaching local kids. They will learn teaching tips from the guidelines of an experienced teacher trainer.
I am an experienced teacher with 15 years of teaching experience who have given a number of teacher training workshops and have coached teachers as well. Students have to attend their classes only on weekends except in April. In April, we have water festival and we make a change a schedule for two weeks in April. Workawayer can teach students communicative English alone or can teach with another teacher. The idea is students and workawayer can exchange cultures and students can be exposed to fluent English speakers from different parts of the world. They can prepare lessons for one day per week or two days per week and they can teach once a week and about 5 hours teaching time per week. They can do other extra curriculum activities with students based on their hobbies and interests if they are inclined to help students more. The school is basically empty except weekdays. There will be an intensive camp for two days at the end of May where students will stay together for a night. This is also a new idea for this year.
As mentioned above, volunteers can teach alone or teach with another teacher. It depends on their comfort level. Guidance and materials will be provided.
Yes, students pay to attend the school. However, the pay is affordable for them and not much for the facility they get in return. The rent is quite high in here and our vision is for students to get more than what they give. Last year, we ran without an expat teacher. This year, with the same amount of school fees, as a way of giving students more service, I am reaching out to you for more support.
The teaching atmosphere should be fun and relaxing whereas students learn at the same time. I can provide some guidelines and am willing to learn from you. The expectation is students can get authentic English exposure from a fluent English speaker or a native English speaker.
It is an apartment in a new building. One of the classrooms will be provided for the accommodation which is air-conditioned. Yes, we can provide the volunteer a private room/ space. The photos of the room the volunteer can stay are attached.
We can provide our local food prepared with care and love.
The helpers can travel around the city during their time off and they can use public transportation or taxi. Sometimes, I can give a lift to helpers.
