Description
Hi! 🙂
We are a mother and son, living on a farm in a small village in the beautiful Serra de São Mamede Natural Park.
I, Almut, have lived in various countries and travelled extensively. I enjoy nature activities such as mountaineering, snowboarding, camping (although I haven't been doing a lot of these activities lately) but I also love going to electronic music festivals or reading a good book. My son is nine years old. He is a bundle of energy who is happiest in nature!
Our farm is 2.5-hectares, located on a hillside with beautiful views and has lots of fruit trees, several springs and beautiful quiet surroundings. We moved here only a few months ago so are still settling in, organising, creating, building... We are using the farm mainly to grow fruit and vegetables for ourselves and my small agricultural business and to enjoy being in nature!
The farm is located at the edge of a small village, and a shop and two cafés are in walking distance. There is a reservoir nearby (within biking distance), and some beautiful historical castle towns. There are several hiking paths in the area and a nice alternative community with plenty of events happening, particularly in summer.
I also have a small agricultural business producing dried fruits and fruit wines, but also sheep wool products (rugs, cushions etc.) The business is still very small and not making any money yet, but I hope this year will be the year it takes off! Note: Workaway volunteers will not be doing any tasks related to my business, rather they will work on tasks related to our family farm.Types of help and learning opportunities

Creating/ Cooking family meals
Help around the house
General Maintenance
UN sustainability goals this host is trying to achieve
Cultural exchange and learning opportunities
We try to integrate volunteers in our family, which is easier to do when there are only 1 or 2 volunteers at our farm. My son (9 years) loves to meet and play with new people. We often take our volunteers to events we attend.

Help
I am happy to welcome volunteers who are happy to carry out a variety of tasks – they can range from cooking and fruit and vegetable preservation to easy building tasks, farm maintenance work, farm and garden work to playing with my son. Therefore it’s also important to me that volunteers like children!!
Right now, one of the main tasks is taming a wild part of our farm. This means lots of cutting of brambles and discovering neglected fruit trees, but also clearing waterways and finding the hidden springs! It's all very exciting :)
The volunteers stay either in a separate area of my house or in a small apartment of a separate house 2 minutes from the farm. Both spaces have their own bathrooms.
I welcome volunteers of all nationalities and genders but do prefer people over the age of 25. We are also not able to accommodate volunteers who eat a vegan diet.
Some tasks you might take part in October/November/December:
- Cutting/removing brambles
- Clearing waterways
- Restoring old water systems
- Planting trees and plants in our private garden
- Cooking meals
- Playing with my son!
If you are interested in staying with us, please tell me in your message what attracts you to our farm. I am looking forward to hearing from you!Languages spoken

What else ...
Our farm is at the edge of a small town with two cafés, one restaurant, a little shop, post office, pharmacy and playground. There are also a couple of nice walks you can do around the area.
Within 15 minutes by car there are two beautiful castle towns: Castelo de Vide and Marvão. The region's capital, Portalegre, is also just a 10 minute drive from our farm.
There is an artificial lake nearby (less than 10 minutes by car). The area has a lot of nice hikes, and there is still a lot of fairly untouched nature here. There is a lot of water in the area - our farm has several springs!
There are a couple of buses per day to the neighbouring towns, but to explore the area a car is an advantage!
I have one important caveat: As I am a single mother with a small son, I do not accept single male volunteers unless I have more volunteers at my farm, for safety reasons.A little more information
