We are a three generational family from Scotland, Carol 64, Crystal 33 and Luna 11 whose life in the historical village of Cherven started when Carol bought a property in 2006. She then moved to live here in 2008 renovating and bringing back to life their first property on the outskirts of the village, which is situated in the Rusenski Lom Natural Park and is 35 kilometers south west of Ruse.
We now live and work over three traditional Bulgarian properties with just over 2 acres of land where we have a large organic garden for growing food and keeping animals. We have goats, rabbits, chickens, ducks, cats and dogs.
We enjoy having volunteers come to help and to share this beautiful spot with some magnificent views.
There is always plenty to do including, clearing land, weeding, planting, making compost bins, basic building and loads of ongoing projects which are sometimes weather dependent and whether you have the skills or not.
There are guest bedrooms in Carol's house, suitable for singles and couples and there is a caravan with a double bed. There is also plenty of land for camping. We have 2 tipis which will be erected once the poles are prepared. Good wholesome food is provided and there is excellent wifi access.
We are particularly interested in people who enjoy land work and gardening and/or who have basic building trade skills but have generally found that everyone has something to contribute.
We are flexible in terms of tasks and time input and we can agree what would work for both of us.

Cherven is situated in the Russenski Lom Natural Park and is well known in Bulgaria for its medieval ruins. There are lovely walks in and around the village and if you are interested to learn about goats you could accompany us when they are taken out to graze in the surrounding area. There is a post office and a library in Cherven and a small shop/bar open every day apart from Mondays. There is also a cafe/bar by the river at the foot of the medieval attraction. The nearest ATM accessible by public transport is in Ruse - our nearest city ( 35 kms to the north east ). There are two buses a day to and from Ruse which has a very large and beautiful central square area which is known as "Little Vienna", because of its layout and architecture. A great place to hang out on days off people watching from the numerous pavement cafes. It is also possible to take a trip to Bucharest from Ruse on the Bosphor Express ( a slow train which runs daily between Bucharest and Istanbul ). Bucharest is 60kms from Ruse and there are also direct buses from the airport or the centre to Ruse which can be booked online.
