Are you looking to learn more about what it is really like to homestead? Do you want to learn how zero waste can be more than a buzz word to get you to buy something new. Are you interested in learning how to live a more natural way of life?
We are Trevor, Rachael and Aurora an American family that has been living on Ometepe since 2011. We are passionate about learning new ways to maximize the under utilized resources on Ometepe. During the Nicaraguan crisis of 2018 we remembered the reasons we fell in love with Ometepe. Most important to us is that our community of local Ometepians and foreigners that have chosen to call Ometepe home are some of the most amazing people of the planet. You will find countless people here who share a vision with us for a sustainable Ometepe. To that end, we work tirelessly to experiment with the resources available here.
We have begun making oil and soap but need help streamlining the process. Going from coconuts on the tree to oil and then a bar of soap is a slow process. We bake handcrafted sourdough bread and trade them with guesthouse down the road for their surplus fruit which then make into jellies and wines. It’s a lot of chopping fruit but the end results are delicious. We are also committed to a project to bring cleaner burning earthen stoves to local families. All of these projects take time to see to completion.
We are hoping to incorporate our project as an NGO but currently it is Trevor and Rachael, with some help from Aurora- who is 4, working with the help of a few volunteers to bring these dreams into reality. We are working on converting our existing spaces to workshop areas, so If your not afraid to camp, to shower in outdoor shower and use a composting toilet your on the right path.
We need help maintaining the homestead activities on our property as we are often out in the community working on the logistics of our projects. Sometimes all we need is someone to lend a hang with dishes or to entertain Aurora, other days we are looking for someone to shell 10 pounds (5 kilos) of peanuts. Currently we are leading a stove building or earthen construction workshop at least every other week, which you are encouraged to participate in and learn. We do ask a two week minimum and preference is given to longer term volunteers. We only accommodate a few volunteers at a time so if you are looking for a large social scene we might not be the place for you. However, there are plenty of activities and restaurants nearby in Balgue. If it still sounds like what you are looking for come out and check out our Jardín de la Vida and see if maybe we can work together to preserve a more natural way of life.

  • Unterkunft

Camping is available and with a little work can provide more comfortable accommodations. Our property is rustic at the moment and we need to reclaim the land from the jungle. Outdoor showers, composting toilets and primitive cooking should be exciting for you.
