We are looking for passionate, hardworking volunteers to help us rebuild and operate our sea turtle sanctuary on the Pacific coast of Nicaragua.

Every year, hundreds of sea turtles come ashore to nest on our beaches. Unfortunately, poaching, predators, erosion, and environmental challenges threaten many of these nests. Our goal is to give as many hatchlings as possible a chance to reach the ocean safely.

We want to be completely transparent.

Turtles do not follow a schedule. During active nesting periods, there may be days when volunteers are asked to help beyond the standard Workaway guideline of 5 hours per day. Some work takes place at night when turtles come ashore, and occasionally additional help is needed during busy nesting events.

We do our best to balance workloads and provide plenty of downtime whenever possible, but volunteers joining this project should be coming primarily because they care about wildlife conservation and want to make a real impact.

Participation in extra conservation activities is always appreciated and helps us maximize the number of nests we can protect.

    Who We Are Looking For

This project is ideal for people who:

    Love nature and wildlife
    Are comfortable working outdoors
Don't mind getting sandy, dirty, or occasionally wet
Can work independently and as part of a team
Are willing to adapt to changing schedules
Are excited to contribute to a meaningful conservation effort

No previous turtle conservation experience is required. We will teach you everything you need to know.

If you're looking for a meaningful conservation experience and want to directly contribute to protecting sea turtles, we'd love to hear from you.

"Every protected nest gives dozens of hatchlings a chance to reach the ocean." 🐢🌊

We’re looking for enthusiastic volunteers to help with a variety of projects, our eco-friendly beachfront community in Nicaragua. Please note that we are off the beaten path, away from shops, nightlife, and other conveniences — this is for people who love nature, quiet, and adventure!

    Your help can include:

Surf & Yoga Support: Assisting with surf lessons, yoga sessions, or helping set up classes and equipment.

Kayaking & Hiking: Guiding, maintaining, or assisting with tours and outdoor adventures along the mangroves, beach, and surrounding trails.

Turtle Conservation: Supporting our upcoming sea turtle sanctuary, protecting nesting sites, and helping with hatchling release programs.

Environmental & Gardening Work: Beach clean-ups, mangrove conservation, and caring for our herb, vegetable, and fruit gardens.

Maintenance & Hospitality: Light repairs, cleaning, guest assistance, and helping with daily operations.

Creative & Community Projects: Photography, social media, or other initiatives that help share our mission.

We welcome Workawayers who are proactive, adaptable, and passionate about nature, wellness, and community. No prior experience is required — enthusiasm, curiosity, and a willingness to learn are what count most!

This season, we need dedicated volunteers to help us rebuild the sanctuary infrastructure and prepare for the arrival of nesting turtles.

    August: Sanctuary Construction & Preparation

Volunteers arriving in August will help us:

Rebuild and expand the turtle hatchery
    Install fencing and protective barriers
Build shade structures and storage areas
    Clear and prepare nesting zones
Create educational signs and visitor information
Help maintain trails and access points to the beach

This work can be physically demanding and may involve digging, carrying materials, and working outdoors in a tropical climate.

    September Onward: Turtle Conservation Season

Once nesting season begins, volunteers will help with:

Night beach patrols to locate nesting turtles
Collecting and relocating eggs to protected hatchery areas
    Monitoring nests and recording data
Protecting nests from predators and poaching
    Assisting with hatchling releases
    Educating visitors about turtle conservation
    General sanctuary maintenance

Bunk beds in our staff house. Literally 40 steps away from the beach.

We have a staff house. The house counts with 4 bedrooms 2 bedrooms are always in use because they are used by our construction team. (The construction team has been with us for over 9 years).

We pay the Foreman to purchase food for the whole team and each staff memeber takes a turn to cook one day all 3 meals. When the builders leave, they usually leave on saturday after lunch and return on mondays around lunch. When this happens Workawayers will have to take their turns in cooking unless Said has planned a cookout-or something similar.

Volunteers stay on-site and become part of our small community.

    Please note:

We cannot accommodate special dietary requirements.
Most of our staff is male.
Our volunteer program is new, although the place itself has been operating for many years.

    Other relevant information for Workawayers:

The location is remote and off the beaten path, which means you’ll experience peace, quiet, and nature — but it also means there are limited shops, restaurants, and public transport nearby. Volunteers should be prepared for a simple, self-sufficient lifestyle and bring any personal items they may need.

    Time off and local activities:

Relax on our pristine beaches or take a swim in the ocean.

Explore the surrounding mangroves and river systems by kayak or on foot.

Go surfing at nearby breaks (all skill levels welcome).

Take part in hiking adventures to explore local wildlife, rocky points, or tidal pools.

Participate in turtle conservation programs during nesting and hatching season.

Discover small local towns or markets if you have your own transport.

    Living style & house rules:

Life here is community-oriented, relaxed, and respectful of nature.

Volunteers share responsibilities like cooking, cleaning, and maintaining the property.

We live sustainably — waste reduction, composting, and water conservation are part of daily life.

Quiet hours are observed in the evenings to respect guests and wildlife.

Pet-friendly and casual dress code, but appropriate swimwear and footwear are recommended for activities.

    Transport tips:

Most volunteers bring their own transport (bike or vehicle) if they want to explore beyond.

Local buses or taxis are available but infrequent due to our remote location.

Walking and biking are the best ways to explore the immediate area.

This is a great opportunity to disconnect from the busy world, enjoy nature, and make a meaningful contribution to a growing eco-community while gaining hands-on experience in hospitality, conservation, and sustainable living.

Internet: Wi-Fi is available at the main clubhouse, but speeds can be slow or intermittent depending on weather and the number of users. We recommend being prepared for occasional downtime. Workspace: There is a common area at the clubhouse suitable for laptops, but there are no private offices. Bringing noise-canceling headphones and a power bank is helpful. Power & Outlets: Electricity is available, but as a small eco-community, occasional outages may occur. Charging stations are limited, so plan accordingly. Flexibility: Volunteers who need to work remotely should coordinate hours with project tasks. Some mornings or afternoons may require participation in hands-on activities like gardening, maintenance, or turtle conservation. Work can usually be scheduled around these responsibilities. Time for exploring: When not helping with community projects, there’s plenty of opportunity to surf, kayak, hike, or enjoy quiet time on the beach. Tip: Digital nomads who thrive here are those comfortable balancing work and outdoor eco-adventure, and who don’t mind occasional slow internet or unplugged time while contributing to meaningful projects. In addition to turtle conservation, we offer: Beautiful Pacific Ocean beaches Surfing opportunities Mangrove ecosystems rich in wildlife Birdwatching Fishing and kayaking Incredible sunsets A remote and authentic Nicaraguan coastal experience Watching hatchlings emerge from the sand and make their first journey to the ocean is something you'll never forget.
