    UPDATED 5/27/17

This is a beautiful, authentic, little hotel run by a lovely Nicaraguan family. The owner Carlos is a key member of the community and is actively involved in helping in many ways (you can help also if you would like!). Here we are all about unity and helping each other for the greater good.

We are located in a very laid back place with tranquil surroundings. Jiquilillo is undiscovered by tourism at the moment and has a really chill vibe. Think - waking up and falling asleep to the crashing of the waves, laying in the hammocks or on the beach with a good book, interacting with the local kids and families, watching the fisherman bring their boats onto shore in the morning (or going out fishing with them!), surfing, kayaking the mangroves, and much more.

At the moment our staff consist of Carlos and his family. His includes his wife Mercedes, who is an amazing cook and a beautiful human, and his children whom are all equally as lovely as well. Additionally we have a few volunteers come through here and there.

We would love to welcome 1-2 volunteers to help immediately during the months of June and July with a number of projects around the hotel to help improve the place and bring more tourism to the area (specifics listed below). Additionally, we foresee there being opportunities to help with eco-awareness and environmental projects at a future date, but we are waiting on a few more things before they get up and running (funding, decision-makers to make next steps, etc....remember we are on Nica-time). The eco/environmental projects we foresee are:

    1. Mangrove Reforestation - Here we have the largest remaining Mangrove forest in Central America, Estero Padre Ramos Nature Reserve. Like coral reefs, mangrove forests are extremely productive ecosystems that provide numerous beneficial services both to the marine environment and people. This beach is also one of the last two major nesting beaches for the Eastern Pacific population of hawksbill turtles. This project entails constructing the housing units which shelter the young mangroves and then planting the seeds.

    2. Rubbish Management and Recycling Efforts - At the moment there is no rubbish collection in the area and it all gets thrown in the surrounding nature or burnt. This project also contains working with the community and together learning how to devise a plan to combat this issue.

As a volunteer you will be experiencing authentic Nicaraguan culture at its rawest. Jiquilillo has not yet been changed by tourism and is still an authentic little fishing village. With not much English being spoken you will definitely improve your Spanish here. Additionally, you can learn an abundant amount of things from local experts.

We also can arrange fishing trips, sunrise or sunset horseback riding trips on the beach, a volcano visit (Cosiguina Volcano has a hot lake in the middle which you can swim in!), kayaking the mangroves (featured in Lonely Planet as 1 of the Top Things to do in Nicaragua), and tortilla and cheese making classes.

Being here really makes you appreciate the simple things in life!

Note - We PREFER Workawayers who are already in Nicaragua or Central America and can arrive within our 2 month out window as it is difficult for us to make arrangements farther in advance due to changing conditions at the site. We have found that solo travelers are sometimes easier to host, but couples are welcome to apply (we cannot host more than 2 people however at this time). Lastly, we like to at least have volunteers commit to a week (somewhat of a trial period) and if everything goes well we are happy for them to stay longer!

At the moment we need help with:

    1. Beautification of the Hotel & Grounds - cleaning, general maintenance, painting, construction work, signage, mural design, creating things from recycled materials, etc.
    2. Assistance with Tourists - customer service
    3. Online Presence and Publicity - assisisting with online booking systems we just got up and running, social media knowledge to increase awareness, manual creation for future volunteers, photography, videography, menu for the restaurant and menu of tour offerings (English & Spanish)

Until the Mangrove Reforestation Project and Rubbish/Recycling Project kick off a possible environmental project could be to organize a Jiquillilo Beach Clean Up Weekend (create marketing materials, visit local hotels to gain partners, advertise in town as well as Chinandega and Leon, coordinate logistics, bring more tourism to town for a weekend to raise awareness, etc.).

*️️️️ We are offering a lot of freedom and flexibility during your time here. While there are a few things that are immediate needs, we also are up for ideas that you may have during your time here. For example, there are a number of local kids and young adults who have asked about English classes - if you would like to commit to an hour a day holding classes with a small group then go for it! The ideal volunteer is someone positive, easy-going, a self-starter, a genuine desire to help others and the local community, and is willing to help in different capacities depending on our changing needs.

Basic Spanish-skills is also an advantage, but not required.
