Notice: We are looking for someone, experienced builder/carpenter to help us in October/November
We live on an old estate with 25 rescue equines (donkeys, ponies and horses), 18 rescued pet pigs and various sheep, goats, dogs and chickens. We are part of a larger animal rescue charity, this is our private residence with mostly retired animals unsuitable for rehoming. We also are looking for volunteers for the larger rescue farm, more details can follow if you are interested.
We have a resident trainer (Megan) who focusses on positive reenforcement and reward based practice only, which works best for traumatised animals. The animals thrive in a calm environment therefor we are looking for positive attitudes, happy to muck in and get through the manual labour as well as patience and thoughtfulness with animals who need time to come around. This is incredibly rewarding work if you enjoy tuning in to the little achievements each day can bring in the rehabilitation world.
You need to be physically fit and strong for the yard work and preferably have experience with horses. If you are not a morning person please don't apply, We do loads of big jobs in the morning!!
Betreuung von Tieren
In return for your help you will learn how to gain trust, work safely with equines and prepare horses for general care and maintenance such as hoof care, dental work and handling using positive reenforcement.. You will learn about not just the everyday care of pigs and goats but also the less agricultural side of welfare such as the phycological and nutritional needs of farm animals not intended for slaughter, and therefor focus is on longevity of health. We are not traditional in certain methods where force is used, so you will learn a great deal about body language, reading behaviour and monitoring your own behaviour to ensure successful interaction with the animals here.
We are looking for volunteers who are over 22 years of age and have had experience in a work environment before.
Daily tasks would be hay and feed everyone, medications, mucking out stables or paddocks, foraging enrichment for the farm animals, Physio exercise or training with equines, field management such a fence fixing, various yard management jobs to keep the place organised, and spending time with all the animals providing attention and companionship. Help with documenting certain animals progress by video or photographs, meeting potential adopters and visiting our main rescue centre are all optional, depending on your interests and time.
English, a teeny bit of French.
Your accommodation would be a newly built log cabin with central heating, double glazing, kitchen/diner, bathroom and bedrooms. We also have an independent bedroom cabin suitable for couples. If you are travelling alone there will always be other like-minded volunteers here with you so you won't be lonely!.
You can prepare your own meals with the ingredients of your choice we provide. If you are not confident with your cooking skills I will be more than happy to help.
Please note this is a vegetarian residence and not suitable for people who's dietary needs require meat, so be sure you are comfortable to go without meat during your stay. This arrangement has not suited people who eat a lot of meat normally because they miss it after a week or two!
Volunteers must have advanced English, the routine can change daily so understanding English is very important. Also for safety reasons there is sometimes the need for quick explanations.
Volunteers must have their own health insurance before making travel arrangements.
My boyfriend and I work from home and need our home to be quiet, this means you are free to relax as you please in your own self catering cabin, watch movies with your cabin mates or walk/cycle (we have 3 bikes here) to the local traditional pub for a nice Guinness. We are close to canals, forests and country lanes. We have a lovely covered decking area where you can cook, enjoy a bottle of wine and stay warm in the evenings. There are buses to Dublin, Galway and everywhere from the local village, as well as our regular travels to Dublin where we can give you a lift. As you can probably tell so far, we are looking for peaceful souls who are happy in nature, independent and most of all, excited by learning about animals and how to care for them.
