    *COVID-19 UPDATE

    Dear travelers,

Although the borders of our country have already been opened, we continue with sanitary measures to avoid any possible contagion from both sides. However, we have decided to open our doors to 2 volunteers, for now, and thus continue with the social-cultural enrichment that is the basis of our project.

The way we interact has been affected at all levels, if you decide to apply, you will have to be flexible to assume the sanitary measures that we follow on the farm. If you come with an open mind this is an opportunity to enjoy and connect with nature and the community here.

If you decide to travel to Nicaragua, please visit or ask your travel agent or airline about health requirements.
    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If you're already in Nicaragua and have accounting knowledge, we have opened up a long-term position in our coffee dry-mill bridazul.

ACCOUNTANT - Export-oriented, working with coffee farmers, sustainable at heart

Do you want to learn more about how coffee is grown and what it takes to get it ready for export? Do you like to go deep into numbers and come out with actionable information? Do you like mountains, lots of nature and farms?
We will provide you with lots of coffee, 3 meals a day and a place to sleep with the added benefit of a hot shower 😊

bridazul is a micro-mill founded in 2018 out of the necessity of several coffee producers looking for an out-of-country market and accompanying prices that allow them to run their farm in a profitable way so they can take better care of their workers and the environment their farms are in.
Our mission is to make positive contributions by creating long-term relations through traceable coffees with transparent service.

    We are asking for:
Help in our existing team of accounting with an emphasis on reporting and analytics for a minimum of 3 months. You would be bringing your experience to give another view to our team while learning about the different aspects of coffee farming and export.
Working days and hours can be discussed.

    Work experience:
Experience in business analysis, accounting, and/or bookkeeping
    Preferably within an international context
Preferably in a social and/or environmental oriented business

    Other requirements:
    English, Dutch, and/or Spanish
    Medical insurance is highly recommended

bridazul is based in Ocotal, Nueva Segovia. Your hot shower can be found in Dipilto in the cool mountains in the north of Nicaragua where you will spend your nights on our coffee farm.

Let us know if you're interested in sending your CV to tim@bridazul.com

The Nicaraguan highlands are known for some of the world’s best coffee plants.

The coffee farm is now being further developed in a diversified farm (coffee, other food crops, and animals) and shaped into a platform for the exchange of knowledge and cultural values between the native people and individual travelers from around the world.

With this platform, we want to improve the local economy and quality of life. Furthermore, we strive to maintain Nicaragua’s cultural values in times of growing tourism.

Space where travelers can learn and live the culture and also give some of their own experience and individual values to the local people. It’s about to give and take.

Based on our values we believe that every person has an individual way of how to approach a new culture. May be through music, meeting local people, and learn about their history, get involved in coffee, one of the most precious goods of Nica’s agriculture. We want you to find your individual bond to Nicaragua’s culture.

We wish that this place may spread the experience of how tourism and local cultural values should collaborate in order to protect and preserve the countries historical and cultural values.

We believe that every person has an individual way to experience or being touched by culture. That's why there is no fixed planning or requests to leave space for individuality.

    Activities can be
    - learning and helping in the coffee field
    - Working on the maintenance of the seedbeds
    - taking care of the animals
    - working in the vegetable garden
    - looking for cultural roots that you are interested in (pottery, music, farming, coffee, history, basket weaving, etc.)

If you still don't know what to do, these are some of the things we could use some help with:
    - want to help plan and populate the garden with fruits and vegetables
    - know how to build a website and/or have design skills (logo, packaging, website,...)
    - minor construction work to finish the new kitchen and volunteers room (the building is already there)
    - can help on finetuning how to handle a wood-fired oven (mainly for sourdough pizza and bread, present at the farm)
    - have experience in setting up a shop/consumption space for farm-grown food and assorted things: think roasted coffee, jam, fermented vegetables, dried herbs, bread, cakes, coffee wood items, weaved baskets & lights,...

    We ask travelers to
    - have a basic knowledge of the Spanish language - otherwise, the exchange for both sides will be difficult or be taking language classes on the farm or in the town close by twice a week
    - not consuming drugs or alcohol on the farm
    - being willing to adapt to the culture and treat local workers respectfully

If you feel like a deep-dive into the Finca life could be what makes your journey, we are happy to hear from you and are also available to respond to whatever remaining questions you might have.

This is where our main focus is on: we want you to interact with the people we work with on the farm and learn from their way of doing, help out where possible with what you like to do. Discover nearby towns and see how you can connect to people and your own fields of interest there. We won’t push you into anything you don’t like to do, but we want to give you the opportunity to discover yourself in a different light and under a different sun.
We place a huge emphasis on cultural understanding and mutual respect. This will be a complete cultural immersion in a Nicaraguan farm and rural life. Volunteers absolutely must be open-minded, humble and willing to learn about a culture which may be new to them, as well as sharing their own. This is key for a successful and happy experience that both parties can benefit from. This means respecting and adhering to the lifestyle and hours kept by the family and workers as well as co-operation and real efforts to collaborate and comprehend colleagues and their working styles within the project itself.

This is entirely up to you, we have a running coffee farm as a location. How do you see your life there?

There are a lot of opportunities: coffee harvest and processing, diversifying crops, building animal enclosures and raising other animals (bees, fish farming in a lagune), help running the kitchen for the coffee workers and volunteers, be responsible for being point of contact for the volunteers (long term), photograph or film on location, teach yoga classes or help workers in establishing a more ergonomic way of working, help build our website,...

What is your strength and what do you want to share? We’re open to your suggestions and ideas.

You’ll be living in the same conditions as the farm workers: you’ll have a roof above your head, a mattress, running water and electricity. Food will be supplied three times per day.

Unlike many Workaway placements, we are asking a small fee per week to cover volunteers' food. We have a fully working coffee farm where we pay the workers on the farm, we want to give you the opportunity to spend time on this farm in the way that you want to, in the way that you see fit. That means no working hours are required from you, working is a great way to integrate but if you want to do it in another way that's fine too, this is about your experience and how you want to live there.

Because of our focus on integration in the culture we also ask volunteers to spend at least a minimum of three weeks.

Please, under NO circumstances whatsoever, give money to the people you work with, other than the specified amounts for food etc. We want to give them a hand up, not a hand out. We feel that giving money generates the wrong spirit and does not contribute to the sustainability of the project. If you would like to get them a small gift, please feel free but don't give out cash.

    Thanks!
