Everything was great. Communication before and during the stay was always very clear and friendly. Ana cooked amazing fresh and healthy food for us. During the working hours we were usually in the forest with António, clearing trees that he had cut the year before. The work was hard
… read more but also a lot of fun and it was great to see how the land transformed in those 4 weeks.
On a free day, we did a full tour of the island with our hosts and they showed us some amazing spots that we would not have discovered without them.

Beyond that, the conversations, the warmth, shared meals (which were amazing, always on time and well portioned- Ana and António are restaurant owners so they KNOW how to cook), and overall atmosphere made this experience unforgettable and very unique. They were always very friendly and hardworking people available to do all we needed.
The two together are a great asset.

I stayed with Ana and Antonio for 2,5 weeks in the month of October and November. We were a group of 5 working in the forest: Ana, Antonio and two other Workawayers and I.

… read more improvements. They truly strive for excellence in everything they do. And on top of that they have different projects all going at the same time!
Despite their busy schedules they took an entire day to drive us around the island and showing us all the nice spots.
I felt very well informed before arriving. Their communication before and during my stay has been excellent.
During summer season Ana and Antonio are running a restaurant so it felt like eating out whenever we had food together.
Working in the forest is physical but doable. Basically its about getting rid of invasive plants. We always had a break in between to eat some sandwiches.
What I did in my free time: exploring the island, running, hiking, cycling, swimming, climbing Pico mountain, visiting Fajal and Sao Jorge, drinking Maracuja ice tea in Cellar Bar and playing card games with the other workawayers.
Antonio very kindly picked us up whenever we needed a lift.
I am aware it wasn't really part of the plan to have girls working in the forest. So I am very happy they gave me a chance nevertheless!
I would also like to mention that I was very happy there were other Workawayers. Its been such a fun time!
Ana and Antonio allowed me to be off to spend some time with my sister who was visiting. That means a lot to me as I don't see my sister very often. Thank you!
Thank you Ana and Antonio for having me! All the best with all the upcoming projects! I know you can do it! In 5 years I am coming back to admire your beautiful forest and all the fruit trees with zero invasive plants :)

My stay with Ana and Antonio was a 10/10 experience, they are the true definition of what a Workaway host should be! Since day one everything went super smoothly, both for the volunteering work and for the co-living at home with them. As for the work, it might indeed be physical at some moments, and some tasks might become a little bit repetitive,
… read more but at the same time, they took really good care of that by making sure I was having proper breaks and some fruits and water every time I would need them. Also, they split the day into different slots so the work wouldn’t be always the same. Believe me when I tell you they are not the type of people who just want to profit from your work (as might happen in other Workaways), they take care of the people who help them by doing the same in return. They would always make sure I was taking the best out of my free time to get to know Pico and also took me around the island a couple of times. Moreover, they showed a lot of interest in my journey, so the conversations we had during lunch/dinner were super deep and philosophical, all while helping me to improve my Portuguese (and I progressed a lot thanks to them). As if it wasn’t enough, the little village where they live is super calm and beautiful, and Anna is a superb cook. I really felt like I was home with them, and there are not enough words of gratitude to express how thankful I am to them for that.
