We teach diving. We are a recognized 501c3 non profit charity that operates a dive school, gives tours and excursions, and we do marine conservation projects. That’s it. Nothing else. No distractions. Nothing to steal our focus. And we’re guided by very simple principles: treat others with respect, be kind, protect marine wildlife and fragile marine habitats, and ensure students have access to the highest levels of professional and safe education, while having lots of fun and enjoying the sport. We provide free or subsidized accommodation for divers, students, trainees, visiting professionals, and guests. Come join us!

We run a thriving diving school in Cozumel, Mexico. Even in the "down season" there is always something fun to do. If you're a diver, this may be a way to get more experience. That said, please keep in mind the philosophy behind Workaway; we are interested in a healthy, positive exchange that we all enjoy. We love people, and really love meeting new people who bring us interesting backgrounds and world views.
One of the main things you benefit from is being in a new environment, and you may even learn new skills and develop an understanding about our industry. Of course, you also get to meet and interact with new people including our staff, customers, students, other Workawayers, and locals.
If all you're looking to do is come here and dive for free, we can't help you. We often get requests from people to give away the very professional services we provide to actual paying customers, which isn't why we're on Workaway. Our relationship should start out on the right foot; it should be a win-win for both parties in all cases.
Please do not assume any trade of work or volunteering for diving, especially if your offer is to do grunt work all of us do every day like cleaning, sweeping, et cetera. If you come here with the right attitude and heart position, and you'll have a wonderful experience. We are very giving people and love to share, but we don't want to be taken advantage of anymore than you want to be taken advantage of. Fair, is far.
On that note, you may be able to trade out extra work (above and beyond the normal schedule) for diving or by offering very *️️️️️️️️️️️specialized skills*️️️️️️️️️️️ you may have for scuba training or fun dives, but even under such circumstances, you'd be responsible for paying your PADI or SSI material, membership fees, and/or any hard costs.
If you think you have specialized skills that would help us become a better school, or indeed better people, reach out and share your ideas. In those cases where you have something unique to trade, we'd cover your tuition and diving costs, but the skills you have would need to be commiserate with the value we'd be giving you in trade. Please keep in mind that our instructors have worked very hard and invested considerable effort, finances, and time to earn their credentials.
An example of a special skill might be an artist who does amazing murals, and can show that they've done it professionally. Clearly, someone like that could bring value to our environment here and a professional trade would be welcome. Another example might be someone who creates incredibly dynamic, emotive, and compelling narrative driven videos (live-action or animation) that could be used for marketing and to showcase our offerings.
But to be clear, your skills would have to be at the professional level, and you'd need to show us clear examples of previous work. Simply owning an iPhone does not make you a professional photographer/videographer, anymore than owning a box of Crayons makes you an artist. Being able to sweep, mop, move scuba tanks, wash dishes, or make beds are not special skills; all of us here, from the senior instructor down to interns, can do that and in fact do ever day.
We have decided to provide Workawayers with the opportunity to earn their Open Water scuba certification for $247USD. As a non profit, we will cover the difference as a grant. Normally, we charge $547 for the course, which is well in line with industry standards. Our goal is to make learning to dive as a new experience affordable for anyone wanting to enter the sport, especially our friends here on Workaway.
*️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️*️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️ No professional courses (Divemaster, AI, Instructor, etc) can be traded.*️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️*️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️
Anyone who helps as a personal assistant will also learn about publishing (and the process of writing a book), some elements of online marketing, and other aspects of that kind of business.
We operate a scuba school (not a shop), and at our main dive house in Cozumel we host students, professional candidates (divemaster, instructor, and specialty instructor trainees) visiting professionals, and other guests. We are a professional operation, and a licensed dive center.
We welcome both divers and non divers to help out, which includes keeping the place tidy, organized, and clean. Moving and prepping gear. And assisting with logistics, sales, and marketing or other similar tasks the manager assigns. We do not have a "typical" day; it changes all the time with similar tasks throughout each season. Every day is different, and the tasks you may be helping with will vary from day to day too.
You may be able to also provide personal assistance to one of our directors who's an author. That would entail reading/editing books he is currently in the process of completing for publication, helping out with basic "office" type task, scheduling, et cetra.
If you have sales and marketing skills and experience we will consider offering you a professional diving internship.
Please inquire about our dive training internships if you are proficient in these domains.
PLEASE read all of our profile completely before applying.

Generally, we can host between 8 and 12 people at any given time. Workawayers are invited to stay for up to 5-days. It is possible we may allow an extension, but it isn't guaranteed.
We have two communal rooms that are similar to hostels or dorm style living, with single bunk beds. There are two off-suite bathrooms with showers that are also communal, and one half-bath. Like other communal living spaces, we have very strict rules in place to ensure safety and harmony among guests and staff. If you have difficulty with rules, we're not the right Workaway for you. If you're cool with it, and you're respectful, you'll find friends here.
*️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️*️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️ Please note, we do not generally have the ability to host couples or families *️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️*️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️ Ask us anyway, as in some rare instances this may be possible. But it is not the norm. Also, we keep men with men, and women with women. If you're on a individual Workaway account, please do not ask us to host your "friend" who doesn't also have an account. We book one person, per bed, per visit.
We do not provide meals (it's Mexico, and the food is inexpensive and tastes amazing). But, we do have a kitchen you can use. The entire complex is a non-smoking location, so unfortunately, this Workaway is not suitable for smokers. We do not allow alcohol at the dive house either. At all. It goes without saying that drugs and weapons are never permitted, and you'll be asked to leave if you violate these rules. There are no exceptions.
We want you to have lots of fun and enjoy your stay. That said, we take security and our house rules very seriously. This helps everyone have an excellent experience. Each door has it's own lock, which can only be opened with a code. No keys are given out to prevent them from being copied. The code is assigned to you upon arrival, and is unique to you. When a workawayer, student, guest, or even staff leaves, the code is deleted and never repeated.
If you're flying in, Cancun is cheaper, but you will have to take an ADO bus to Playa, then a ferry to Cozumel. You can also fly directly into Cozumel. Depending on when you come in, we may be able to pick you up. But our schedule is very busy so that cannot be guaranteed.
We have a curfew. The main entrance is locked at 10PM (2200 hours). We will not open it up again until the morning as we get ready for dives. Any guest who does not return by that time, will be locked out of the Dive House. Those who value a nice, safe, quiet night sleep will enjoy it here; it is the exact opposite of a party house. We run a dive school after all, and people are here to train and they are investing a significant amount of their time. effort, and funds to succeed at their goals. That means they need to study and they are up early to dive, so they don't need another guest stumbling into their room at 4am drunk. If a curfew is your idea of hell, the easiest way to avoid it is to simply stay somewhere else.
DO NOT, under any circumstances, show up without permission. Unless we have a phone, Skype, WhatsApp, or Facebook conversation, and we explicitly approve your visit, you will be turned away. We wish to meet everyone in advance. It's important you are happy with us too. Friendship is a two-way street after all. Those Workawayers who are accepted will be sent a Welcome Packet with full details and expectations spelled out in complete detail.
Cozumel is an amazing place, and we love to share it with people just like you. If you're not familiar with the place, look it up; this is an outdoor person's dream, but even more so for scuba divers. The water is INCREDIBLE. You can see forever. Blue. Clear. Warm. It's an amazing place to see with cool history. It's also only a ferry away from the mainland where you can visit Playa or maybe go south to Talum. We're situated in an authentic Mexican neighborhood, walking distance to pretty much everything you'd need. We'll do everything we can to ensure you have a wonderful, fulfilling, safe, and fun experience.
