While taking a two year sabbatical to travel and teach around the world, I found myself in the Domasi region of Malawi where I began volunteering with a community-run collection of nursery schools. During this time, I worked with both local and international volunteers to build up the capacity of these schools as to give the children a valuable head start in their education.
Because all of the nursery schools fed into the same primary school, I found myself in close collaboration with one. Here, I quickly realised the many challenges being faced to include; overcrowded classes, inconsistent student and teacher attendance, uninviting and uninspiring learning environments, minimal teaching resources, as well as gaps in basic infrastructure (eg: water, toilets, electricity, etc) but also saw tremendous hope and promise from a few energetic teachers eager to make change!
So, together with these teachers, the school management team, and local community leaders, we developed four primary goals to holistically improve the school.
1) Build new facilities and renovate existing ones.
2) Introduce new approaches to teaching and administration.
3) Invest in modern IT equipment and a wider range of teaching resources.
4) Assess and improve students’ all-round well-being.
While lofty goals for such a small project, we feel that this holistic approach is the best way to help students improve their educational experiences and create greater opportunities for lifelong success.
There are no charges whatsoever in coming to help at our project. A lot has been achieved already, but there is still much to be done and we look forward to having you join our team!

Accommodation is located 35 kilometers from the school in a three bedroom house in Liwonde. I currently live here alone and have workawayers come and stay in the two spare bedrooms. I drive to school almost everyday so transport is with me, but there is an option of using a motorbike if anyone would like to have some independence!
I have two spare bedrooms to which there is a 3/4 size bed in each. The house has running water, flushing toilet + cold shower and electricity. Although, in Malawi, electricity comes and goes fairly often so be prepared. I even have a fire pit in the garden which is a great place to relax and have a beer!
Future house improvements: an electric hot shower, outside cinema (have projector-just need a white wall constructed) and to improve the garden in general!
With a half-day every Friday, weekends can be filled with lots of opportunities to see Malawi and let your hair down. Choose from some of these highlights below;
