We're two adults and two young kids living in Melbourne's inner north. We're up for meeting people from other places and we've recently moved house and need some help getting our garden sorted out (paving, weeding etc) plus a bit of carpentry converting the shed to a studio (for a workawayer with the skills). We would like to host a workawayer (or two) who is independent, curious and adaptable. We'd love to host someone with skills to help with our shed renovations or chicken coop construction but if you don't have those skills we'd also love help in the garden. We are interested in stays of about one week. We sometimes host a home-stay language student in our spare room so if our calendar is blocked out that may be why.
James is a hydrologist and often working pretty long days, and Nina is studying ceramics part time and being a mum. Our children are now 8 and 5 (a girl and a boy). We have a good sized back yard with chickens and Guinea Pigs and we grow some of our own veggies and create a fun space for the kids to play and learn. We try to live a well-informed and environmentally aware life here in this urban environment.
We're very close to Preston train station (about 30mins to cbd) and also walking distance to a great tram line that will take you down Brunswick St, Fitzroy, and into the city. Preston market is only a short walk away too and is worth a visit.
Cooking / shopping
Current help would include (if skills permitted): chicken coop construction, cladding a stud wall with timber boards, building shelving, brick paving and general garden work.
Cooking is welcome if you're comfortable cooking for a family.
We have a mostly vegetarian diet, typically eating meat about once a week, but happy to be totally vegetarian if we had guests who were. We buy mostly organic seasonal fruit and veg, as we receive a mixed box from a community supported agriculture scheme.
English (and a bit of German - James only)
Spare room in the house (3 bedroom house). There is a queen sized futon bed in this room.
We are currently interested in stays of about one week (occasionally two) at a time, not long-term stays.
Limited internet access
We have pets
We are smokers
We really enjoy talking with people from other places. We also love sharing our knowledge of what melbourne has to offer. If you are interested in melbourne's art and music scene or local environmental initiatives then we're in a good location to access lots of stuff that goes on in melbourne's vibrant inner-north.
3 plus meals cleanup max 25 hours a week
