Gliwice is a good starting point to go for short trips to other interesting Polish places.
To the East, there is Wieliczka salt mine near Kraków which is on the list of UNESCO sites. It's the oldest salt mine in Europe which has been working for the last 900 years.
To the South you will find picturesque mountains (Beskidy, Pieniny, Tatry) to go to for a little hike and Zakopane, a town which is a typical Polish mountain culture centre.
To the North-East we've got a very interesting region with medieval castles and lime rocks suitable for climbing and hiking.
If you wish you can take a fast train to Gdańsk and enjoy the beauty of the Polish coast on The Baltic sea.
