One acre property located 30 minutes of downtown Chattanooga, Tennessee which has been the place my husband Tom and I have raised 3 children, almost all grown in a culturally diverse home in the South. We have a large, unfinished home and I want to create an artistic retreat. The house has been a 10 year project with 3 unfinished spaces and a lot of needed organization due to life changes. The goal is to make the property an artistic retreat and long term Workaway destination. I love people and culture and since I am currently unable to go to the world, I would like the world to come to me.
My name is Christina and am a freelance artist/author/illustrator/designer with a myriad of knowledge that includes those subjects but also has interest in sewing, fiber arts, environmental issues, composting, permaculture, upcycling, creative alternatives, canning, hobby gardening, healthy eating, and cultural/world lifestyles. That's just the tip of the iceberg.
Tom, is the love of my life, best guy in the whole world. He's either working or on his way to work mid-week. On the weekends, he is often found working on projects around the house, or helping me with schemes and projects that I have dreamed up.
My kids are grown and my youngest lives at home and plans to become a Workawayer later this year. It would be great to have our first Workawayer here, be seasoned with lots of stories, tips, and advice to share.
I have 3 cats, and 1 massive fluffy dog named Thor and they all live in the house. So, needless to say....must love furries and not be allergic.

My home is a mix of cultures. My husband is born in Thailand, raised in San Francisco and I am Florida born beach baby Italian, raised in California, valley girl from the 80s with a artsy hippie vibe landlocked in the South. We've been in lovely Chattanooga for 22 years and find it one of the best places in the South. My grandmother, who lives with us is from Italy and moved here after marrying a soldier in WW2. Participating in a Workaway in my home would expose you to that mix and vibe along with opportunities to possibly learn new skills, participate in artistic endeavors, and probably make some new friends in the exchange.
Learn to Cook
If you would like to learn to cook, this is a place where everyone is welcome in the kitchen to learn or to share your own recipes! There can be Thai food, baked goods, garden salsa, and home made pizza all in one weekend. It's happened before.
Improve your English
If you would like to improve your English, I'm able to help with that and I'm always eager to learn about your language and culture.
Learn to DIY
Can you paint a wall without taping it? I can show you that and a myriad of other skills from how to use tools or let you loose on a project that will have a bit of creative license.
Create a Whimsical Garden
I'd love you to leave your creative mark in my garden. We have 1/3 of a wooded acre that I want to create paths, fairy houses, cute whimsical garden art......I'm going to open that up for creativity.

1. Seeking help during the summer in wooded area to create a tiny campsite with a storybook and woodland garden behind house with intention to be used for artist retreat.
Would possibly welcome a team under the right circumstances.
Are you interested in camping on site?
Have pad for vans with electric hook-up available and would welcome tent campers. 5 minutes from lake.
2. Seeking 1 individual that would be interested in household work, daily chores, small home projects, and light gardening, brushing a fluffy marshmallow dog, and maybe a yoga instructor (get me into a routine).
3. Early morning gardening and/or outdoor projects - need to be finished before the heat knocks you flat.
Overall, seeking organized, willing, and creative personalities willing to learn while doing.
I want to create an artist retreat through Workaway.....however....
My house has been cluttered from life, activities, moves, and kids coming and going....I need help bringing my vision for the house to fruition. Meaning, instead of downsizing to a smaller house now that my kids are grown, I want to invite people to come here through Workaway. I have the room, I just need to organize it. That's where you come in. I need someone who can follow a list, follow directions, is naturally organized or likes organizing, there will be a lot of ORGANIZING and Painting. House work would range from painting, light gardening, organizing, cleaning, outdoor property clean-up, light construction tasks, and and if you don't know how to do something, I will teach you. You will learn skills that you can take to your next workaway experience and if you are awesome, I will shout it to the world.
Must have an open mind to odd ideas as I am a creative type and do weird things, often on a whim; painting projects, tiling, build outs, odd gardening projects, or furniture transformations.
Do you practice yoga? I'd love to learn to practice at home too.
1. How much time is expected and the details of the tasks you need help with:
Your work days would include 4 days on and 3 days off or more. We can discuss times and projects ahead of arrival & agreement according to your desires & skills then finalize details through a job description after you get here. You won't likely be working alone for projects, if you are working, it's likely that I am working beside you or on a closely related way. I'm looking for help not someone to do it all.
2. How meals and food will happen:
a. You will have full access to a stocked (vegetarian) kitchen. Meat is not forbidden however, if you are a meat eater, you won't likely find a lot of meat options here. I discourage meat in my home. Most of our meat is sourced responsibly & locally and we don't often cook meat in house. This is a 90% plant based household. You will get a full introduction to the kitchen when you arrive and are welcome to join us in every meal. We cook a lot, we eat a lot, and we have never had anyone leave our home hungry. Everyone in our home knows how to cook and if you don't, we can teach you.
b. When the family has gathered (usually on weekends) we cook big meals and eat together. However, mid week most meals are prepared and eaten as family arrives home different times. You are welcome to make yourself food as long as you leave the kitchen as you found it.
c. On your days off, you are welcome to eat at the house but please bring your own resources for eating out or ordering take-away food.
We have amazing internet so when you are here, you should be able to work your devices easily. Please bring your own devices as we do not have a phone landline. You are welcome to use the internet in your free time while you are here.
4. Public transport info:
Please note, although downtown Chattanooga has public bus transportation () it does not run to our area, we are located 30 minutes from downtown Chattanooga and 15 minutes to the public bus line by car. Lyft/Uber are available to our area. If I am able, I will do my best to get you to the public transportation on your off days, however, be aware that I have limited care for my grandmother and will not always be able to get you where you may want to go on your days off. Please bring your own resources to enjoy your day off, including money for transportation. Just in case.
If you have a car, we have parking for you on the property...please let us know ahead of time.
5. Things to see and do locally:
The Chattanooga area is amazing for all kinds of activities and depending on the time of the year, you will have a wide range of free or inexpensive choices. We live a short distance from the lake and all the on water activities that you can imagine from the inland perspective. We are home to a myriad of festivals that can be found online. We have art, live music, social events, great food options, and outdoor activities.
Outdoor activities are plentiful and Chattanooga has been voted best outdoor city in the South:
6. Can you accommodate families/children/animals?
No unless discussed ahead of time.
At this time, my bed space is limited and I would be open to more than one Worker only if we have discussed sleeping arrangements ahead of time.
*️️️️️️️️*️️️️️️️️Please do not bring any animals unless we have discussed otherwise, I have more than enough for you to snuggle.
Should be over 21 years old.
*️️️️️️️️*️️️️️️️️Physically capable of work described and WILLING TO SIGN LIABILITY RELEASE FORM.
Don't be scared, we won't be doing all of these in one visit,
No need to KNOW how to do described projects, I'm a great teacher if you are a great student!

Free access to anything in the stocked kitchen, however, we eat a mostly vegetarian/ plant based diet and are very selective about meat care and prep that comes into the house. If I am cooking, I will always make enough for everyone who lives in the house. If you don't eat it, it becomes lunch the next day for anyone who wants it. If you would like to fix your own meals, the kitchen is available for your use.
This is not to say that we are completely meat free, because we have 4 different personalities in the house, sometimes, meat happens. However, MOST of our meals are plant-centric and most meat meals are dined out.
We do not have set dinner times but often will gather and eat together when everyone is home at the same time.
Transportation can be discussed in further detail, however, we are not on line with public transportation so arrangements will need to be made on days off regarding getting to public transportation or doing downtown for activities. Lyft is available in our area.
We live 30 minutes outside of Chattanooga, close to the lake in a quite, edge of suburbia rural property.
However, downtown Chattanooga, on the river, is alive with arts, live music, coffee culture, and a unique gem in the South. Depending on the time of the year, there are lots of free events or activities to attend.
Outdoor activities are plentiful and Chattanooga has been voted best outdoor city in the South:
Limited internet access
We have pets
We are smokers
Max 25 hours a week
