Wonderful experience - Laurence is a strong part of the fabric of today's New Orleans culture and was generous in sharing truly special occasions and introductions to some of the people who have been connecting music, food, and community here across many generations on a deeply meaningful level. staying w Laurence was great!! I stayed w her for a total of 16 days, during which I got to know both her and the city of New Orleans. She showed me around the city and gave me some great recommendations on what to do, and she even brought me along w her to several different events around the city. For one she brought me to a one-way music

As a Workaway host she was very fair, both w the hours of work and the kind of work I was put to do. I tended to her garden, once that was finished I did some chores around the house. To summarize, Laurence is a great host, and I would definitely recommend her to other people looking to workaway in New Orleans!!

My experience staying at Laurence's house was great. Laurence is a welcoming person who's easy to communicate with. She's definitely the perfect person to show you around, and she's also very engaged in the community, something that

I really didn't want to leave a bad review as most of my experience was positive, although I do feel inclined to as Laurence's comment didn't speak to any of the work I did for her & that hurts.
Laurence agreed to receive me for 2 weeks during mardi gras and as her previous workawayer had done most of her gardening work, I helped w the chicken
… read more coop & weeding. I also regularly washed her dishes and cleaned her toilet once. Mostly, I completed hours w a grassroots organizer friend of hers who's mobilizing community in the upper and lower ninth wards against several city planning projects which will ultimately devastate this area. I really enjoyed doorknocking & getting to know local neighbors as I wanted my time in new orleans to be intentional.
As theres a lively night scene, I stayed out late many nights. Laurence's request was to let her know when I would do so and to take an uber back after dark as the walk from the busstop to her home is not very well-lit. Regardless of how late I stayed out I always woke up early and tried to share many mornings with her during breakfast. She had promised really special mardi gras day activities. The night before mardi gras, I let her know I would try to catch some evening activities & thus be in late. I'm guessing she wanted me to let her know I would be in past midnight since when I didn't do that, she said I broke house rules (which left me confused), the next morning she wished me a good day and as I knew at this point we wouldn't do the promised activities together, I decided I no longer felt comfortable in her home. As her front door needs to be locked from the outside, I decided the safest place to place her keys would be underneath a secluded area outside her home, which I communicated via text shortly after.
I've volunteered in nearly 10 places over the past 2 years and I've never felt as uncomfortable as I did with this host. She's a strong willed person who means well and I'm bummed things didn't work out as I hoped. You can only contact Workawayers who have an active membership.

Clarissa is not mean or dishonest but she has incredibly poor communication skills and manners. She broke an important safety house rule and rather than sit down with me and talk about it she left my house to stay with someone else while I was gone and left my key outside the house without even asking me whether that was acceptable.

Staying with Laurence in New Orleans has been the highlight of my trip of more than 7 months with Workaway and WWOOF. She is an exceptional person: I admire her dedication to her community, her compassion, her boldness, and her sense of justice. As a Workaway host, she is more than fair about the work and very generous with her time. She took me
… read more to a once-in-a-lifetime event pretty much every day I was there! Among other things, I got to participate in a group sing at the Healing Center singing freedom songs, go to a second line, and see gorgeous parades like Bohème and 'tit Rex. I doubt there are very many people alive who know New Orleans as well as Laurence does, and she was kind enough to introduce me to many of her friends and neighbors, many of whom are musicians and/or activists. I feel privileged to have seen a side of the city I would never have glimpsed as a tourist, and to have gotten to hear many stories about its people and history. To any adventurous, curious person (and especially any lovers of music), I cannot recommend this Workaway more highly.

I worked 3 hours a day from 7:30 am to 10:30 am and the work was very simple, mostly some housework or weeding. Afterward, Laurance would usually give me a ride to the center where she worked herself, giving me a full day to explore the city, listen to music, or sample the delicious food. I also took a day trip to the Honey Island Swamps one day on Laurence's recommendation, which was one of the best experiences so far, as I love animals and nature. Last but not least, I also can't fail to mention her absolutely adorable dog, whom I often took for walks, for example, watching the sunsets on the Mississippi, which Laurence has right behind her house. I had a blast while staying at Laurence‘ house. She simply took me to every event she was going to and showed me the magical life of New Orleans. She knows so many musicians and the best places to go for music. For me as a musician that was more than perfect!

I feel so lucky for staying at Laurence’s place in New Orleans. She is humorous, caring, and knowledgeable. And all her friends are amazingly talented and interesting as well! As much as she is happy to share her love of the city with you, she also encourages you to explore it independently - she has a well-functioning bike you can borrow and it’s very convenient to get around by bike/bus. For the work part, I did some weeding and house chores in the morning, and Laurence was very flexible with my preference on tasks. I have had so many beautiful and unique memories during my two-week stay: walking with her cute dog on the levee or by the lake for sunset, dancing to great music at bar/in the festivals, going along with the Second Line on Sunday, learning belly dance from Tamalyn, singing with Michaela who sings to whales, playing drum on Congo square……and if you are curious, Laurence is always there to explain things with sharp opinions and impressive/funny stories. All in all, I have learned so much about the city, the people, and the cultures, which I could not imagine doing without Laurence. I’d love to come back to explore more - Mardi Gras, Jazzfest, etc. and I highly recommend Laurence as a host to anyone willing to be immersed in different cultures.
