    Description

We run a uniquely beautiful and peaceful 'wild feel' campsite for adults (and older teenagers) in the heart of the Brecon Beacons National Park, in Wales. Our 37 acres are a sensitively managed haven for wildlife and native plants, where our guests can enjoy the natural beauty of the surroundings without impacting on the creatures that share their environment. During the summer our fields are awash with wild flowers including hundreds of orchids, and alive with birds and insects, whilst overhead you will regularly spot Red Kites. Hares, bats, foxes and owls are often seen in the fields. Our home is on the edge Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), and over 600 acres of open common land. We are in an International Dark Sky Reserve with outstanding night skies. At 330 metres above sea level we are sited directly opposite Pen y Fan, the highest peak in South Wales, and are superbly placed to explore the Brecon Beacons.

We live with eight horses, two dogs, two pet sheep and a free roaming peacock who has chosen to live here!

We live in a truly outstanding area of Wales, with beautiful scenery, and amazing walks direct from our home. We are perfectly situated for those who love nature. Artists, photographers, star gazers, walkers and those who love outdoor sports and activities will never be bored here.

    Cultural exchange and learning opportunities

We can offer learning opportunities in gardening and growing, land management for restoring habitat and biodiversity, animal care and welfare, and tourism and hospitality. Our campers are an interesting and friendly bunch of folk, several are regulars and feel more like friends. We also have many visitors from Europe, as well as Canada, America and Australia, and there is almost always someone cooking their food or chilling and happy to chat in the communal area of the campers' barn.

Please note - sadly, due to Brexit laws, this is a paid position only for workawayers who may work in the United Kingdom legally.

This will be our third year of hosting workawayers. We have met some wonderful people who have been an amazing help to us.

We require help for two and a half hours a day, for five days a week (if you want to earn more money and work six or seven days that's also fine. Several of our previous workawayers have done this). This work will be paid above national living wage at £11.50 per hour. We can take one or two workaways.

The work will involve cleaning the campers' facilities.

The campers' facilities consists of shower rooms (2), toilets (3), wash up areas (2), and a communal cooking and eating area. You will likely spend some time chatting to our guests and good English and a friendly manner is vital. It is important that the cleaning of the campers' barn is done thoroughly and diligently. You will be shown what to do and given a check list of jobs to work to. You must be able to work independently, to a high standard and have an eye for detail.

We have an established and productive vegetable garden with no-dig raised beds and a polytunnel, and produce a wide variety of produce. Help may be required with seasonal garden tasks. There are no particular skills needed for this work, we are happy to teach inexperienced gardeners and show/work alongside you until you are clear about how to proceed with any tasks.

You must be reasonably physically fit and be prepared to work independently - although there are times when we can work with you we are very busy throughout the camping season and need our workaways to be reliable and responsible. Previous cleaning experience is desirable

We would like folk to be able to commit to at least a whole calendar month, and ideally have an overlap of a couple of days either side to be able to work alongside new Workawayers coming in for a day or two to help them settle in.

    Accommodation

We will accommodate you in one of our six camping fields. You are welcome to bring your own campervan or tent, or we can provide a tent with bed/bedding. You will be camping on the edge of hay and wild flower meadows. All camping areas are well spaced out away from one another to give privacy and peace. You will have access to showers, toilets, hot water and washing up sinks, electric power points, a fridge, freezer and cooking facilities in the campers' barn.

Due to how busy we are and that neither of us are particularly keen cooks, we prefer workaways who are independent in their meal prep and cooking. If time allows we will be able to have some shared meals. Food will be vegan or vegetarian.

  • What else ...

    What else ...

Our home is perfectly sited to explore the Brecon Beacons. As well as the obvious peaks of Pen y Fan, Corn Ddu and Crybin to be summited, you can walk to the Craig Cerrig-gleisiad National Nature Reserve and the Fforest Fawr UNSCO Global Geopark. We are a 20 minute walk from the National Park Visitor Centre which has displays and lots of information about the area. We are surrounded by beautiful scenery and superb walking.

We are 5 miles from the town of Brecon, with its beautiful cathedral (which also houses an award winning bookshop and coffee shop), and Brecon Jazz Festival, which goes on for two weeks in August.

Hay on Wye, the world famous 'Town of Books', and home to the Hay Literary Festival (late May/early June) is half an hour's drive away, as is Crickhowell, a small but thriving market town which won 'Best High Street in the UK' in 2018 for its range of independent shops.

In the opposite direction, but also about half an hour's drive is Merthyr Tydfil and it's museum to the Industrial Iron Age in the South Wales Valleys. There is also a mountain steam railway, and for adrenaline seeking mountain bikers, Bike Park Wales!

We are around 20 minutes driving from the largest natural lake in South Wales (Llangorse Lake) which offers opportunities for water sports. We are also near to rivers which makes for excellent opportunities for kayaking or paddle boarding, and close to the famous Four Waterfalls Walk, where you can even walk behind a waterfall!

Cardiff, the capital city of Wales is an hour and a half away by public transport.

Our nearest bus stop is 2 miles away, but we can arrange to give you lifts to and from the bus stop and most of the above are accessible by public transport. Depending on how long you are here for we can arrange to help with transport to the more inaccessible locations if you don't have your own vehicle.
